localzuk Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 So, 2 of the schools that are joining our MAT are within line of sight of our school. Only issue is height, with the LOS being to a point about 3m above the height of our roof. Has anyone else erected a mast to mount wireless gear on it at their school? If yes, have you got any advice about planning or other requirements?
Steve21 Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 We used a point to point link at my old school (bought a sports centre down the road and converted it to our PE zone). When using the link we had to use a massive pole to ensure it would be high enough to go over any buildings that were built in between, as any open ground can be built on (and was being) Must be talking a good 6-10m pole if not more on ours. Obviously need to consider proper secured mounting (cables etc) more for the weather aspect, a little wind can easily blow it off course And only a small bend in a pole will break the links if it's not huge kit. Obviously wireless licenses are needed too if you're using decent kit, as it's crossing public ground etc (assuming a microwave link?) Steve

This is probably something you need to ask your Local Authority, but generally speaking I can't see it being an issue. 3m isn't particularly big from a distance as to not impact negatively on neighbours. Another consideration is a wired PTP which will always be faster, more reliable and will be in the ground for no one to see.
localzuk Posted January 28, 2016 Author Posted January 28, 2016 I would likely get a proper comms company in to do the actual work, and advise on the equipment itself. I'm more looking at anything specific to the pole really. Things like - did you get objections from neighbours? Did you have to get planning permission?

Wired PTP would be a big job, as it'd involve digging up about a mile of the main road into our town... The 3m would be above our roof height, so entire height probably in the range of 10m.

The initial cost can be pricey, but the reliability/rent moving forward is quite reasonable, giving you a solid 10, 100 or 1000Mbps link, depending on requirements. Also - with a reliable link in place, the other school joining your MAT can end their broadband agreement and just tap into yours. It does work out more cost effective. Steve21 Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 S/SP/09/1815 | Installation of 1 no. Microwave Dish. | Kingsdown School Hyde Road Swindon SN2 7SH That's our internet connection over Microwave dish at my old place, swindon moved away from wired internet too old fashioned Might help Will try to have a dig for the Point to Point between sports centre and school one too. Steve
MrPstv Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 We are in a MAT and are currently in the process of moving our ISP, as the schools are miles apart the only option for the MAT is for all schools to use the same ISP and to specify VPLS. 100 meg each site all run Office 365. We are trying to replicate all services across the MAT so for support it is a no brainer.. Hope this helps..
PotNoodleTech Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Surprised you had to get planning permission etc Steve, as I understood it, you wouldn't normally need it in a secondary due to size of site, distance of neighbouring houses etc. I could be totally wrong though!
Steve21 Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 That one I linked above was the council who applied for err their own planning permission As it's their tower in the middle of the town to our school via microwave link. And it might be different if it's within your own site but if it's to MATs it's all the RF rubbish etc - http://pa1.swindon.gov.uk/publicaccess/files/03177DE3197DB4DAC30CD95F359A8F1F/pdf/S_SP_09_1815-DESIGN_AND_ACCESS_STATEMENT-271987.pdf End of day if it's something extruding from a building etc it normally needs permissions, as example see Flag Pole and CCTV mast - S/ADV/13/0302 | Installation of a 6m. high flagpole and display of eco-flag. | Kingsdown School Hyde Road Upper Stratton Swindon SN2 7SH S/09/1845 | Installation of additional external CCTV cameras within the school boundary and installation of 1 no. 4 metre CCTV mast. | Kingsdown School Hyde Road Swindon SN2 7SH Steve
PotNoodleTech Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Blimey. They build whole buildings here with no ..... issues such as those!
Michael Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 It makes sense, as it's similar in the satellite world too. For example, you're only allowed 1 x satellite dish no larger than 1m across and a second satellite dish, no larger than 60cm - both attached to your house. Realistically, anything bigger than 1m, it's probably going to be better off on the ground, but again this doesn't require permission.
twin--turbo Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 I have used both ubiquity and deliberant kit for links across town providing internet to some business areas that could do little better than 512kb DSL. Even without pure line of sight we could get 30Mb over half a mile, backhauling over wifi to a location with fibre. Another customer had 4 pairs of redundant nanostations providing distrobution from a central tower to 4 branches. Easily getting 50mb to the one 2 miles away.
Meldrew Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 I would advise looking at Ubiquity powerbeam/ We have one to link to our sports field, the other side of a dual carriageway admittedly only about a half mile away, but is rated for something like 20km. Our link isn't even line of site as it goes through a few trees, but we have a rock solid connection. We weren't sure if it would work, but cost something like £160 for the pair so thought it worth a punt - and it worked. Meldrew

Or the Deliberant 5M-18's . Useful planning tool here. https://airlink.ubnt.com/#/ One thing to mention.. Make sure you use real Cat5 and not CCA... TT
