locking os x down on network

Wanted to know what options I have available to allow myself to lock down apple macs on a network ( Per user and in general ie over all )

Well, if you get an OS X server then you can lock down pretty much everything... However, if you wish to tie it in to the AD then you only have per group lockdown abilities and not per user.

You also have the expensive option of centrify or admitmac if you wish to integrate into AD.

Admitmac is probably the more tried and tested method of those 2 options, not so sure how good the centrfy solutions are.

 

We use the OSXServer method that localzuk mentions.

You can use a Mac server or use a third party software called Mac Administrator but i would not advice that software its a bit out dated at the moment but i think they are due a update.

 

Integrating the macs into AD is quite easy. If you have any problems just drop me a PM.

They have only purchased one imac from RM ( no os x server ) so am guessing they are looking for the ad plugin as per mike bombich's pdf on his site.

 

So was curious about what various ways there are of locking it down per user or per group or otherwise ?

I'm still on their mailing list and it is a shame to see what was such a fantastic product being forced out due to the way developments have gone in OS X.

 

gecko knows MacAdmin all too well (we used to use it at my last place, where he was a student).

Its great what the product can do but the admin interface is just so OS 9.

 

But i spoke to hi resolutions and they say a new version is due out this week so fingers crossed. I am using it in my new job only because it auths to AFP and Novell. But I have just managed to use LDAP and novell to auth so fingers crossed I will not need it anymore.
