We are in the process of changing the internet provider for our school. This is something I have never done before and just wondering what would it involve when we change our network to the new internet access / router.

 

I am hoping to keep the same IP range on the new router.

You usually should be able to keep your internal IP address range, but ofcourse the external IP addresses for your connection will change, so if you have any websites or services that are hosted inside the school for external access you will need to make relevant changes.

 

If your Domain DNS and/or Web hosting is with your current ISP, you may want to consider moving that across to your new provider.

Thanks. We don't have anything hosted inside the school. So it seems like a case of plugging the cable in the new router and all should work as long as the IP range is same on the new router.

I don't know if you're changing filtering, or if your BB supplier is your domain host/DNS registrar or not, but having just done this exact thing from a proxied connection to a transparent connection using a Lightspeed Rocket, these are the steps I took:

 

Moved DNS management from old registrar to new registrar - Vidahost

 

Notify new provider of current static routes for external->internal services

 

Installation of the Lightspeed filtering agent on all client devices

 

Installation of the Lightspeed filtering Root CA certificate as trusted on all client devices

 

Setting of DHCP option 252 for WPAD/PAC discovery

 

Change external DNS to advised external IPs

 

Change DNS internal forwarders

 

Change default gateway in DHCP, or to advise new provider of required internal IP.

 

Remove currently operating Proxy details from client devices

 

Remove Proxy from manually set clients

 

Change WSUS to 'no proxy' change SCCM sync to 'no proxy'

 

Update NTP server in DC to new providers NTP

It's usually fairly straight forward as long as you plan each step. We did multiple migrations from the LEA to Schools Broadband a couple of years ago - quite a few of them during the school day. We didn't need to change our internal subnet - although I have done this in the past for other reasons, and again with proper planning it's not too hard.

 

@Oaktech's list above is a great starting point. A couple to add - Change SMTP server details where required (notifying servers, photcopiers etc.). Ask for a copy of your current firewall rules from your existing provider - so you can check what needs to be set up on the new one.

Fair points - we run o365 so SMTP details remain the same for us. I was including firewall rules in my static routes line because they go hand in hand in our case.
