Spare disks

I Have a bit of spare money and just wondering would it be worth having a spare HDD for all our servers to replace if one fails.

We have a support contract on all important servers (next business day) so should one fail we can get it replaced within a day.

But i suppose its that time between it failing and receiving the new disk is the need for one?

Depends on your level of paranoia

if the disks are all mirrored and you have a system that will warn you if one fails then you would need 2 to fail before there was a real-world problem

 

But then people do the lottery so odds aren't always everything

It would be really unlucky for two in the same server to go within a few days of each other, and you may have disks not doing anything for a while... though doesn't hurt to have one or two disks on hand I guess.

 

But then people do the lottery pay the maths tax, so odds aren't always everything

i usually have a spare disk for each server / array to hand

Having just hat to get 2 HDDS (thankfully from different arrays) die recently my answer would be a very emphatic yes.

Having spares meant we could replace the drives straight away instead of waiting for the replacement to come.

Although we just have an HP warranty so it takes 4 or 5 days for the replacements to show up.

Well if you consider that all drives in the server went into use at the same time and "technically" have the same life expectancy, then....
