OK Guys - help me out , as I'm sure it was ion a random thread here I read it.

 

Completely un IT related I know but I swear we have talked about it before

 

I'm after something to clean the cobwebs out of my diesel engine, some fuel additive that will give the whole thing including the injectors a good clean.

 

Any suggestions

I'm after something with a bit more kick than your standard bottle of redex

My parents used to put in a whole bottle of redex instead of the half I think it says.

 

take it to the nearest motorway junction and blast it to the next one and back.

 

Not sure if it actually works but they seemed to think it helped.

after using the cleaner stuff you will need to get your fuel filter replaced.

 

I didn't and my engine cut out from fuel starvation whilst on a motorway sliproad!! OOOpsies!

Neither my parents or my cars have had to do that..... Guess we are just lucky.

Have they had them replaced in an annual service? Only really affected the car when you floored it and the fuel couldn't get through!

something like terraclean get them to clean it then use decent fuel and boot it from time to time to stop it getting bad again

This stuff is quite good:

 

Millers Diesel Power Ecomax 500ml

 

I used it for a while in an old Mk3 Mondeo TDCi with injectors on their way out and it quietened things down and gave it clean out.

 

It does stink though, so if you get it on your hands (or perish the though spill it in the boot) it will linger for days.

 

Some people seem to recommend a bit of 2 stroke oil in the diesel to keep things clean and clear too - don't recommend this personally as it seems risky though.

 

I'd go for an overdose of Millers and an 'Italian tune up'.

My dad has recently started using one of the 'premium' versions of whichever brand of diesel it is where he is filling up.

 

He doesn't do it on every fill up just once every couple of months, he swears it improves the mileage, and generally gives the car more 'pep'.

Is the car fitted with a DPF? I've heard that once these little beauties get blocked up it could be expensive to repair/replace.

Bit more expensive than a bottle of the Redex stuff but my brother had this done on his 100k mile Volvo V50 diesel - Home | TerraClean Apparently made a big difference for him.

DPF's should regen on a short motorway journey say 30mins at above 50mph - check your handbook. you normally get a warning though if your DPF is blocked from lots of town driving in which case sometimes they need to re-gened at garage this can only be done a limited amount of times - also DPF's are a serviceable item at some cars around 90K. Clogged EGR valves can cause poor performance also. Wouldn't recommend 2 stroke with modern direct injection diesels the injectors a fragile enough as it is.
