Joanne Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 OMG why is it do hard to find one that is a reasonable price?!?! I ordered one from CPC - on the website it was in stock. It never came. I rang them, oh yeah we have none left. We put a note on the invoice. Ummm no you didn't. IDN - look on website at TVs, ask account manager, this one in stock? nope. How about this one? Nope. The first one I was looking at was a 40" Toshiba for £199 All the other TVs I look at now are £300+... do I need to accept this? Anyone got any ideas where I can buy a cheap telly through school? Gotta be a Lancashire authorised supplier!

You need to buy a digital display, they are designed to be on for long periods of time and can also handle displaying the same image for long periods. Edited January 15, 2016 by FN-GM
Joanne Posted January 15, 2016 Author Posted January 15, 2016 It doesn't display the same image for long periods... it plays videos. The one there at the moment is a non-brand 27" jobby. I want BIGGER! Also the VGA port on it is dodgy, so sometimes the image flickers to the blue screen.

You need to buy a digital display, they are designed to be on for long periods of time and can also handle displaying the same image for long periods. Screen burn was more of an issue for older plasma tech in my experience. You can still see it in pubs who play Sky Sports all day on their plasmas- the little beer glass symbol in the bottom right hand corner (to prove that the pub has paid for the commercial Sky package and not just the home version) is often burnt in. Haven't experienced it myself with modern LCDs but Wikipedia suggests it does happen. 1

We have a few LG screens around school for digital signage use and find that they're pretty good, especially as they have built in timer options to turn on/off on a schedule. I'm using the 55" Digihome TV's from Tesco for £199. Awful TV for watching HD but great value for Powerpoint info screens. One is in the PE reception and is still running and still in one piece!!! We also had 3x 50" Digihome TV's from Ebuyer, all 3 of them failed with the same fault. 2x within their warranty period and the 3rd just outside the 12 months.
dry Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 (edited) We use LG TVs for most of our digital signage here. Not totally thrilled by them tbh. We use the TVs built in scheduling to power them on and off every day, but the TVs are forever losing the time, despite setting it manually and therefore they're not switching on/off properly. For one (outdoor) screen we use a Philips LCD that's actually designed for digital signage. Yes it was significantly more expensive than any of the no-name supermarket brands but it's given me no bother and I feel safer using it compared to the consumer sets we've got everywhere else. I took time to check and make sure the brightness was suitable for an outdoor environment too, which it is. Edited January 15, 2016 by dry

Have you tried @VeryPC_Colin_M or Misco? Don't know if they are Lancashire approved? 1
azc Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 We're using LG televisions for our signage, the oldest of which date back to 2010 and they're still going strong. Haven't had any fail, haven't noticed any burn-in either.

VeryPC_Anthony_L Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Hi all, Ideally if you are getting a screen for digital signage I would recommended going for a commercial screen as these have a better warranty that is designed for the screens being used for a long period of time. At VeryPC we have been using the LG screens quite a bit recently as the cost and quality is spot on for what most people are wanting. If anyone would like a quotation on any screens please PM me.

Also OT: Sky change the 'level' of beer in the glass on a regular basis (I think daily) and send enforcers around to pubs. Means they can quickly identify if the commercial Sky installation is genuine or whether the pub has put a beer glass sticker on the bottom corner of the screen!

No screen burn, spot on and look neat (and cheap). We've had digital signage running via Apple TV (1st gen) which was fine, but we are now moving towards using Google Slides and Xibo. 2
synaesthesia Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Any decent TV should stand up to that level of operation, and any failures are down to poor parts. TV's are still prone to capacitor issues usually by crap manufacturers using crap parts. So many "big" brands these days like Toshiba are just rebadging the same Vestel crap that you find in Tesco, Asda etc (Polaroid, Wharfedale, Blaupunkt etc). A decent brand LCD will be fine.

Depending on the definition of commercial, but the difference between the units we were recommended and Digital Signage displays were astronomical. These have held up well, been in since last Easter and no sign of burn.
