Wondering if anyone cna point me in the right direction - I have a Lenovo laptop which is just over a year old with a damaged power connector. Normally I would take it to a local company who do a good job for a reasonable price, however in this case they are struggling.

It's one of the new style square/rectangle shaped power connectors - anyone able to recommend someone else who I'd be able to try and get a repair done for a reasonable price? I'm annoyed because otherwise the laptop is fine and I don't want to have to purchase a new one for something which should be a reasonable fix!

Thanks

If it's the same as the listing difinity posted, it does look a bit of a pain to repair. Normally with the soldered type of connector, we would sometimes have to snip the pins and remove the connector, then desolder and remove the remaining bit of pin in each hole one by one.

With this one, it looks like the pins are almost too broad/short to do that. I can see why they're struggling, but I guess it's manageable if you're very skilled at soldering.

I really wish more OEMs would move to the 'flying tail' type of connector where you simply unplug the cable and swap it out. No soldering involved.

Right, learning to micro solder well is now going on my New Years Resolution list! (that's along side learning to skate, properly wheely-ing my bike and progressing my Microsoft qualifications)

I see those sliders and pot and raise you QFN and TQFP48, removal and replacement :)

Also HDMI and ethernet sockets.

Nightmare...

I've done a few, but it's not worth the grief for most things! I do HDMI sockets and ethernet sockets though.

I highly recommend getting a microscope and a hot air station.IMG_20160113_140013.jpg

That TQFP48 is a common failure in Samsung and Sony TVs, costs less than a pound vs many for the TCON, and the QFN is common on laptop motherboards that are dead otherwise.

Nice, i have the AOYUE 474A++ desoldering pump but it's cr@p due to a manufacturing fault, can't wet the end with solder. I need to modify it with a Hakko end.

I mostly work on laptops though and use hot air.

Chip Quik is handy too.

Ah yeah, I had that issue with the desolder station, I found it was the plating on the tip, I just scrubbed it all off with emery cloth.

I'd tried that and it was no good. Just given it good scrub and all is well, down to the copper under that rubbish silvery coating.

Yeah it looks like that part so not sure then. Will have a chat with them about it.

It's about £45 they charge us for doing it if they can, if they can't then no charge. I've that much going on at the moment that for the price I am happy to pass it on to someone else to do and get sorted rather then spend the time dismantling and faffing around with a power connector. Doing USB ports on Midi keyboards was a pain, Screens and other parts I'll happily do myself.

Thanks for the recommendations and links, will take a look and get in touch.

I'll happily do it for you if they are struggling. £40 and that includes return postage.
