Hi

We need to replacing our ageing backup exec system, currently D-D-T

I have heard good things about backupAssist but couldn't quite get the licensing (Nearly the end of term :p)

I see the base licence is £108 now do i need 2 licences as i would have two backup servers or do i need 5 licences as i will be backing up from 5 servers?

All windows, all physical and two with SQL databases.

On a side note can anyone recommend some good windows servers to backup to? Or can you go for NAS servers for it like QNAP? Need two with at least 30TB of useable storage.

Cheers

Just a side note but when you say 30TB is that really 30TB or like lets say 5TB with 90% dedup'd?

We run local storage on our backup server as the repository (14TB drive after RAID), but we have 73% dedup rate on backups, so we've saved 28.5TB (aka 42TB real storage in backups)

To be honest i'm not entirely sure what you mean. We currently have 12TB of backups on our backup server at the moment.

Not sure if you've used 2012+ much but there's a new feature built into it that allows storage saving for similar files.

So for example our daily backups are 4TB so on normal storage 5 days worth would be 20TB

But dedup wise you save approx 70-80% per backup/file, so you'd only use like 4.8TB even though it's 20TB of data.

Hard to explain haha :)

We run BA, you pay for the number of installs you require, so eg,

1) You have one Hyper-V Host, and on that host you have 5 Servers, you need one licence, as you have installed BA once. (plus you'll need the Hyper-V Restore add-on)

2) You have two physical servers you want to run BA from, you have other servers you want to backup files from, but not bothered about a system restore / bare metal recovery... You need two licences, one for each install, you can "Collect" files from remote sources on your network, and add them into your backup selection.

3) ***DISCLAIMER: This is from memory and may be in accurate*** You have Two servers you want to run BA from, and 5 physical servers you want to have bare metal restore capability... you need 7 Licences.
