colly72 Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Considering which switches to use as core switches in our school. Just had a reseller recommend Dell as a possible alternative to HP. Does anyone have any experience of Dell switches both for core and edge? Do they have a similar CLI to HP? Thanks in advance, Michael

Norphy Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 (edited) I've tried PowerConnect and Force10 switches, both are Dell brands. The Force10s are pretty good, I managed to beat them into submission so someone who actually knows what they're doing with switches shouldn't have any trouble. From what I understand, they have a very Cisco like CLI. As someone who was used to the ProCurve one, it was different but similar enough to understand. The PowerConnects that I've used however are adequate but nothing more. I'd stick with ProCurves if PowerConnect switches are being offered if I were you. Edited December 15, 2015 by Norphy

ITGURU Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Only Dell hardware I have is one PowerEdge R515 server which I inherited from a merge. It's been the worst server with multiple drive failures! All others are HP and network backbone and wireless are D-Link. Personal preference but never been a dell fan as had issues with their laptops years ago which even the dell engineer being on-site couldn't resolve! Turned out to be a particular model WLAN card that wasn't compatible with our wireless having bought 60 dell laptops!

On another (related) topic, in order to implement ACLs on VLANS, do the edge switches need to be ACL capable, or can I just add the ACL to the config on the core switches? I'm assuming all the work is done at the core?
twin--turbo Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 Having used ( Dell , Cisco , HP ProCurve and HP Comware ) over the last 8 years there is only one I would not hesitate to recomend they have a logo with a Bridge... Dell servers though... I would buy them over HP or Cisco. Bought 5 R730 in May to replace R810's and Looking at 5 more to replace HP DL380 G7/G8's .
PotNoodleTech Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 I'm a big fan of HP switches been using them in anger for 15 years and not had any problems. There may be more competition now from the likes of dell, but back in the day it was Cisco/HP/3Com and out of those HP has most of the features of the Cisco stuff at nearly the price of the 3com stuff and with a lifetime warranty was a no brainer. Dell servers - wouldn't use anything else they've been faultless and they get better every generation, my new R730s are beasts.
Sagima Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 (edited) I don't think I've had a problem with a dell server in the last 12 years that wasn't resolved by replacing a failed hard drive. I think about 12-13 years ago I had a mobo failure in one. Probably gone through 40 dell servers since (edit: just to mention I don't have any problems with my 50 or so dell 55xx and n2xxx series switches. the cli is still basically the same as ios - you just need to check variant of the odd command that doesn't work - they are nicely cheap too.
