Link: Harvard University: Introduction to Computer Science

This is CS50x, Harvard University's introduction to the intellectual enterprises of computer science and the art of programming for majors and non-majors alike, with or without prior programming experience. An entry-level course taught by David J. Malan, CS50x teaches students how to think algorithmically and solve problems efficiently. Topics include abstraction, algorithms, data structures, encapsulation, resource management, security, software engineering, and web development. Languages include C, PHP, and JavaScript plus SQL, CSS, and HTML. Problem sets inspired by real-world domains of biology, cryptography, finance, forensics, and gaming. As of Fall 2015, the on-campus version of CS50x, CS50, was Harvard's largest course.

I've signed up to this. Completely free and if you want your final project marking and a certificate, it's $90, which I'm totally willing to pay if I complete it!

@Joanne

Are you just starting it or part way through?

I'm interested but would like to know more about what you actually do.

Just started it yesterday. You watch lectures and do projects. Starting with Scratch and then working your way up to more complex languages. I just want some proof that I can do what I say I can do.

Cheers, I'll investigate it a bit more :)

Just doing my first project now. Just got to do a simple Scratch program with at least: 2 sprites, 3 scripts, 1 condition, 1 loop, 1 variable, 1 sound.

I've gone over the top slightly and done a haunted house game / animation. Currently I have 6 sprites!

That's ace - did you do the vocals yourself? Love it.

Al

Yes I did.... and very professional they sound too ;) hahahah!

I'm on with Week 1 at the moment. Watched a lot of videos about C last night... thought it would help me sleep, but it didn't!

Started CS50 2017 today. Your scores from the previous years carry over, but you still have to submit the new PSets. Aww man!! Anyone wanna join me?

@Joanne I love the idea of getting into this. My husband is a computer science teacher so could potentially help a bit more if I was to get stuck on a topic or not fully understand something.

I have access to scratch and python etc at school but not at home. Is this software easy to get hold of?

it's all online based. You use a virtual linux box to write the code in. Cloud 9 it's called. All free. Definitely sign up. Only the first week is scratch. I'm onto week 4 and it's all c. I'm struggling to stay focussed with it tbh!
