Allocating unallocated space in disk management - Windows 7

I ran into a problem with my C drive becoming dangerously full today. Went into the disk management and shrunk the D drive by 20 GB with the intention of reallocating that to the C drive. Unfortunately because the 20 GB of unallocated space is sitting to the right of the D and not directly to the right of the C drive the disk management won't allow me to allocate it to the C drive. Is there a way around this please?

I did this many years ago when we were dangerously running low on our C drive of 12GB when we were Server 2003.

That is the tool of choice use it on lots of VMs that people didn't put data on 2nd volume to make 30GB C's bigger

Thanks Andy - that would have been the dog's whatsits but unfortunately it's the C drive I need to extend and the 20 GB of unallocated space is to the right of the D drive?

Did you get the partition sorted? GParted will have done this without any problems. GParted is that good, i chanced it on a RAID5 setup years ago on a File Server. Thankfully it completed without any errors but it dd take 8 hours.

OK folks ran GParted - nice tool to use and it did exactly what I wanted. Sadly after several hours when the job was completed and time came to get out of GParted and restart Windows the latter came up with a message telling me that winload.exe was missing or corrupt Status 0x0000225 I've Googled this and am trying various options. Looking at the disk in an external caddy winload.exe is present.

I forgot the name of the software that I once used until I discovered it sitting in my favourites: Free Resize Partition Manager Software Download

 

This did the trick on a Windows 2008 R2 server where GParted didn't and wouldn't work.

It is a pretty simple problem. You cannot extend your C drive because the built-in disk management only works when the unallocated space is adjacent to C drive. Unluckily, the disk management has no function named "move partition". The only way you can extend your C drive, with Windows disk management, is to delete your D drive. However, you may lose data, too. So, you'd better use a third party partition software to complete this case, just like I did before. BTW, I used AOMEI Partition Assistant before.
