Routers / ISP

just out of curiosity how many schools use the ISP for their main gateway(router). or do you have your own router which acts as a gateway for the school? and then to pass that traffic onto the ISP router / firewall.

 

 

 

internal lan > |ISP router / Firewall> | internet

 

or

 

Internal Lan > | internal router > | ISP router / Firewall > | internet

Int Lan -> Int Router -> Int Firewall -> Ext Router -> Net

 

Obviously depends on the size of school though, most primaries/smaller juniors will just use the ISP as everything internal routing, firewall etc

RBC > RBC Router > Our Switch with RBC VLAN > Smoothwall Boxes > Computers

 

Thats how I had it and it worked well and I could, to test if something was Smoothie related stick my laptop into a port on that switch in the VLAN and give it a public IP and get out without any Smoothie to double check / test for any issue / fault before raising appropriate call.
