Hi.

Some of the staff would like the right click option enabled for them.

 

What are the security implications of this? Does it open up any other avenues of mischief, or is it gonna be harmless to do?

I can't imagine staff wanted to cause malicious damage, and I don't think it's likely that you'll be able to accidentally cause any real harm by enabling right clicking for them, especially if they have their own profile or a mandatory one.

 

I suppose it all depends on how much access you want to allow your staff. We have two staff groups, the main one gives the staff the same amount of access as the pupils. The other one is for CMIS users, they get their own profile and local admin to the machine.

Bit of a dumb question on my part, as i probably know this already but its escaped me at the moment: How are you giving them local admin rights, or are you adding them on each workstation manually?

Don't know about you but I'd go mad if I was forced to use one mouse button. Cut 'em some slack! ;-)

 

Rmb functions are all available through file menus anyway.

I generally enable the context menu in Windows Explorer for staff users, but not pupils.

 

I do however enable the context menu for everyone in Internet Explorer so they can extract images etc for projects.

I think im going blind, for the life of me i cant see the option in the GPO?

I think it's the not so obvious "Remove Drag-and-drop context menus on the Start Menu" setting.

Err i'll have a quick check but i think that's the setting that will stop you using right click.

We have Right Click enabled for everyone, it's an essential function imo for learning how to use the operating system effectively.

 

It was disabled under Win98 because it was too insecure, but with XP you can remove all malicious functions using Policies.

Some people use the XP luna interface and there is a way to browse network neighborhood and to nosey at much more by using the right click even in XP.

I use the Luna interface, but having Right Click doesn't make it any easier to browse the network, or does it? How so?

I don't use it here but i have observed it in the past, i think if you right click All Programs and select explore it opens network places. I think this only happens if you use a redirected start menu which most edu networks do.

Ah, they can't right click on the Start Menu.

Try everywhere there is one area where you can in Luna but can't in the standard start menu, unless you use RM as i think they apply a reg hack.

Ah yeh, I have the appropriate policy for disallowing right clicking the Start Menu, they've no need for that!

 

It just annoyed me when I'd to helpa kid and try right-clicking and it wouldn't work, ggrrr..

The problem that i was refering too alows users to access network places not the C: drive.

To enable right clicking disable the "Remove windows explorers default context menu"

setting.
