New Graphics Card

Didn't want to hijack the other thread as I have a similar question but it slightly differs.

 

I'm looking for a new GPU to go into my gaming rig, I bought a 49" 4k TV last year and though it's lovely my GTX 770 that I currently have doesn't support HDMI 2.0 it only accommodates HDMI 1.4 so I can't get 60Hz. Scaling down the resolution to 1440p or 1080p makes the display pretty blurry (I'm guessing because it's stretching those pixels 4 times across) Gaming is fine at these resolutions but on the desktop isn't, looks awful on my TV.

 

So I'm hoping to upgrade to the 900 series cards to acquire HDMI 2.0 more than anything. What would you recommend as I was looking at the 960 but according to 'some' benchmarks the 960 under performs when gaming compare to the 770. Would the 970 be a better bet?

 

I'm not sure about ATI GPU's as the last one was damn right awful because of it's drivers. Not sure if they've improved at all but if you know a ATI that has HDMI 2.0 and think it would be better bang for buck I'm open to suggestions

 

Last question also but would different brands have different outputs so for example if I went to buy a MSI 970 compared to an ASUS 970 is it possible that one would have HDMI 2.0 and the other wouldn't?

I love AMD graphics cards, but the latest R9 300 series is a poor upgrade from the R9 200 series.

 

They are loud and run hot, even at a better bang for buck I wouldn't want one int he same room as my TV, and i'm a big AMD fan. At the moment go for NVidia, although their next gen is out early next year I think, depending on how long you are willing to wait.

I'd suggest going for more than a 970 if you're looking at 4K gaming. My MSI GTX970 is perfect for 2560x1440 but that's far few pixels than 4k.

 

I think we're a way off of mainstream 4K gaming and unless you want to shell out for a Titan/980Ti that you'd be best off selling for something a little lower resolution right now.

For 4K gaming, you need serious horsepower. A GTX 960 will not cut it, unless you're planning on playing five year old games with it. A 970 is well pushed at that resolution - you're looking at 980Ti, R9 Fury/Fury X/Nano or running SLI with two GTX 970. 4K gaming isn't in mid-range territory yet.

Not looked myself, it was in AMD's press blurbs about the new Radeon Software. They should be popping up.

 

For 1440p, modern games, you're still looking at a 970 or R9 380 and upwards really for your 60fps target.

I love my 970 it's fantastic at 1080p on ultra settings but you'd need to drop down the detail level for 4k, personally for 4k I'd go with one of the 980 series or if you're feeling flush a Titan X but for that you'll be looking at a fair old chuck of cash.

You'll need a lot more than a 970 to get those framerates.

Club 3D's DisplayPort 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 UHD adapter should be available to buy within the next few weeks. This would enable you to connect your graphics card to your TV and run it 3840x2160 @ 60Hz. Perhaps your GTX 770 would be better at scaling games from 1080p to 2160p compared to your TV?

 

Personally I am waiting until Nvidia release their Pascal-based graphics cards towards the middle of next year before even attempting gaming at 4K. Hopefully LG's OLED TVs will have dropped in price a bit by then too.
