Pentium II (Deschutes)

Does anyone have any ideas where i could get a Pentium II (Deschutes) for a old computer. Ive had a quick look on ebay and cant find much.

Contact our friends at ICT Direct or ETB Technologies. They both specialise in second user and ex corporate gear. They often have a stock of old processors.

With PII's though they may just be a little too old at over 10 years. It won't hurt to ask though. It would proberbly be cheaper to buy a whole PIII system!

If anyone can suggest a CPUID util that runs from live CD to identify which ones are a Deschutes, there's a cellar full of old PII machines here I can happily dive into in my lunch hour...

I just threw one out, a 300mhz one at that.

Sorry, I just looked, the skips been emptied and I have long since dumped all the PII stuff.

You might try your local tip, they will let you take a cpu for a couple of quid.

I've chucked P3s in those before from 500 to 800, and they work. In fact my mums rig is an ex-school DAN Slot1/p2 450, with a slotket adapter and S370 1.3 Celeron Tualitin.

 

Just widens your criteria a bit.

To find mine in i put in a kubuntu live cd then used KInfo (something like that) which is under the system tools to find out which it is.

Doesn't it need to be the exact matching processor then? Won't be able to mix and match speeds even if it's another Deschutes. What speed are you after?

Heres some info shown by KInfoCenter:

cpu family: 6

model name: Pentium II (Deschutes)

stepping: 2

cpu MHz: 348.228

cache size:512kb

 

So thats a 350MHz one i need i think.

 

Indeed, you need the exact same stepping.

 

So does that mean i need a processor where stepping is 2?

If there's a way to tell from the CPU casing I got a few kicking about, haven't got a PC with a PII board anymore tho so couldn't boot up to test...

I've only ever checked by booting them up with Linux and checking /proc/cpuinfo. I don't think there are standard markings to denote stepping physically on the chip.
