Ryan_Romeo_ Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Hello All, Got a acer laptop that when booting hangs on the acer screen for ages! But if i remove the CD drive it boots up fine, i have tried reinstalling the drivers but that did not seem to make a difference, when checking event logs got a spam of "Error cdrom, Event ID=11, The driver detected a controller error on \device\CdRom0." If any one could suggest something to try that would be great haha as im pulling my hair out over it really got me stuck! Ryan
Joanne Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 sounds like a faulty drive. You tried changing the CD drive?
Ryan_Romeo_ Posted November 4, 2015 Author Posted November 4, 2015 No I will have to find another member of staff with the same laptop and swap the disc drives over and see if it makes any difference! Thanks Ryan
mowgli82 Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I have the same problem - the drive is faulty inserting a known working one fixes the issue. You don't seem to be able to disable the CD drive in the bios either
LeMarchand Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I have the same problem - the drive is faulty inserting a known working one fixes the issue. You don't seem to be able to disable the CD drive in the bios either If you've got a suitably sized drive from another otherwise dead laptop you can sometimes swap parts over if you have the patience. The fascias are usually a PITA to swap over, though.
Ryan_Romeo_ Posted November 5, 2015 Author Posted November 5, 2015 I managed to find a laptop with the same disc drive, swapped them over and it works fine now! Thanks very much for the help guys!! Just got to get a disc drive ordered now to fix the spare laptop haha! Ryan
Joanne Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Yeah there are a few types of drive. Standard size, thin size, IDE and SATA. Just check which one you have and get one for around £15. You don't need the exact same one
Oaktech Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 I've got a few different drives kicking around, if you post a pic of your drive I'll see if I have anything matching. If I have, you can bung me a couple of quid for postage and have one. They'll only go out with WEEE otherwise!
Ryan_Romeo_ Posted November 5, 2015 Author Posted November 5, 2015 That would be great if you had one! This is what I'm after or something similar:
Oaktech Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 It just looks like a standard drive with no fancy bezel. In theory any old Sata drive should fit. I've got a couple of Lite-On ones I've been holding onto just in case, but i'm upgrading to bluray reader now when a drive dies. So these are just sat in my WEEE pile! PM me your details and I'll bung one in the post.
