RobFrain Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Hi We're probably the last secondary school in Lancashire to purchase Sims Lesson Monitor. We're getting it installed and trained on it next week. One question that has come to me is how would the PE staff use the software? Lessons attendance is still recorded on paper! We have had a look at the Sims App for Ipad, however an additional £600 for it to run on two ipads a year is crazy and our boss won't do that considering we've just paid the £7k for lesson Monitor. How do you do it at your school??
DSapseid Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Ive setup Remote Desktop services to publish the SIMS application and the ipads just use SIMS via that. Before i had that setup i put vnc on the pe teachers desktops in their office and then setup a connection to that pc from their ipads. Both worked but the Remote Desktop Services works much better. I have now published SIMS as well as other applications to all staff for home use as well.
winng Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Some schools I've worked in used Groupcall Emerge as this also works offline when PE teachers are out on the playing fields which then updates SIMS once they are back in range of the wireless.

May have to look into Emerge. do you know rough costs as we only want it for two ipads! Imp also looking at remote desktop fro the ipads but its just not great!!
3s-gtech Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 We just use Windows powered tablets, with wifi in the gyms. They do the registers before heading out. They can also use them for recording pupil product, so they've been pretty handy.

Max_Power Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 We used Windows Tablets with SIMS installed on a WiFi connection - worked well, but then moved onto biometric registration, student scans thumb as they enter the changing room.

AJWhite1970 Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 We have 2 x 10" Netbooks with SSD's and Windows 10 (previously 8 & 8.1) on them with connected by wifi with the only icon being a Remote App shortcut to SIMS. This has worked great for 3 years and the netbooks are PE staff-proof, they are yet to break one!!!

Imp also looking at remote desktop fro the ipads but its just not great!! @RobFrain I would be happy to answer any questions you might have about Groupcall Emerge, just ask away. I am Groupcall's Product Manager. To answer your specific question, for your school for just 2 iPads, the cost would be £424 per year (+ VAT). If you wanted more devices, you can buy individually more on top, or we do a site licence based on pupil numbers (unlimited users/devices). We offer a 4 week trial of Emerge (no obligation and all that) where you get to use on unlimited devices, full services and with your own data (inc writeback, so you can take attendance and all that!). Hope that is of some use to you. Graham

RobFrain Posted January 19, 2016 Author Posted January 19, 2016 Trying to work out if these will solve my problem?!
3s-gtech Posted January 19, 2016 Posted January 19, 2016 Hi - Which tablets do you use? We use HP Pavilion X2 (64GB with 4GB RAM). They've been very good, they also have nice features like a secondary battery in the keyboard.
