Forgotten fantasy book series

Hi all,

 

My girlfriend is looking for a fantasy book series that she read years ago. Its about child miners who turn the mined material into 'Artefacts', magical weapons etc. A young girl is chosen to become an inventor and helps create the 'artefacts'. There's a scene with airships.

 

There are dark creatures from other worlds trying to get through.

 

One of the covers has a orangy moon over glass or a lake.

 

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks mate but she doesn't think that's it.

 

She doesn't think there was any mages, they drew power from crystals that were mined, the girl made the artefacts, people had special gifts they were chosen to create machines or artefacts to power the machines. There was a void with dark creatures and she fought alongside a young boy to defeat them.
