Built in Multi Card reader hit and miss

Hi we have a bunch of Acer desktops at our school and on windows 7 the multi-card reader worked flawlessly.

 

We have since moved to windows 8.1 and now they are completely hit and miss, sometimes sd cards pop up instantly other times you have to wait ages for it to show sometime they never appear.

 

I am completely stuck as there is not a specific driver available for the card reader i have tried uninstalling all usb via device manager and letting windows update install newer drivers but still it does the same thing.

 

I have read that windows 8.1 and multi-card readers don't really work to well but any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried disabling the search Windows Update for driver? Could be that, we have it disabled on most machines.

Yea i have tried that still doesn't work
