Xibo - Need imspiration on designs

I know a few edugeekers on here use Xibo - I'm just starting to get to grips with it.

 

I am lacking inspiration on screen designed......

Posted ours on another thread the other day. Date/time top left, Newsround RSS feed below that, School logo below that and ticker message to left of that.

 

Content region above the ticker cycling through a live slide show, exported PowerPoint slides, videos, adverts, Childline posters etc.

 

(Unfortunately the developer for the live slide show seems to have pulled their website down but it was free and you'd install it on your web server, drag pictures into a folder and it'd play a full screen slide show in the web browser)

Has a revolving presentation of school rules / club times / OFSTED report, BBC News RSS feed, School twitter feed, date and time.

The RSS Feed idea is brill - no idea why I didn't think of that!

 

Just playing with Forum/RSS in Moodle so I can then use the Moodle RSS Feed to display notices of the Signage screens :-)

What have you got behind that screen running the xibo client? Is the power cable running inside the pole? I cant see it. Edit : I see it now along the back of the pole.

MeLe PCG03 is the client- we paid about £80 each for them. It was the only cheap Win8.1 fanless micro PC that also had an ethernet socket and could ship immediately. There are a lot more competing devices on the market now so I'd probably go for something like a NUC or Dell Inspiron Micro (New! Inspiron Micro Desktop | Dell UK) which was £99 up until a couple of weeks ago.

 

Power goes up the outside of the pole and to a double socket on the ceiling, but I think it could well go on the inside- probably just our lazy contractors! Only two cables running down the pole- TV power and PC power, as this client connects wirelessly.

This is a pic of the screen we had installed outside. It's a Philips commercial digital signage screen (bought from Amazon of all places!) in an Armagard enclosure. The enclosure has a thermostat and has a heater/cooling fans to regulate the temperature.

The screen was £1300, the enclosure was about £1800, the client was about £80 and installation was £98. We also had to factor in a network cable run and electrics on the other side of the wall so looking at about £3500 all in! The other screens were all internal so were significantly cheaper- to a point where we got a nod from the head to go ahead with the project.

There is no way on this planet my SLT would spend £3k on an TV outside. I wish they would though!

On a slightly different note..... anyone using Xibo do display RSS feeds from Moodle?

 

I can get my moodle RSS feeds to show fine in a web broswers but Xibo doesn't want to display them

 

Xibo will show RSS feeds from other sites - so I am assuming it something to do with ether https or I missed something......

 

Anyone any pointers?

This is what I was thinking whilst getting the quotes- but then I started looking at The Life Channel etc for complete turn-key solutions and... well... £3.5k was the much better option!

How did you go about getting the news RSS feed? I'm trying to do it with ours, but for some reason it wants to put the feed on multiple lines, instead of one line scrolling.

I actually broke ours a awhile ago as it was scrolling the wrong way and now it doesn't show,!

Check that in the General tab of the feed the Effect setting is on "Scroll Left". Then in the Appearance tab tick the Override the Template option is selected and then edit the settings in the Editor box below to ensure everything is on one line.

 

If you get a feed that won't display, copy the XML of the RSS feed to the W3C RSS feed validator and see if there are any major errors. Xibo seems to like a well formed feed, minor issues are ok but things like ampersands can cause it issues if not properly escaped.

No luck i'm afraid. Feed should all be on one line, it is scrolling fine, but as block, not all one line. Its the BBC news feed...

For what it is worth here is my ten pence worth

Each of the departments has a notice board The web page is the scipt which displays photos from a shared folder. these are set up as a campaign and scoll round during the day

Open day sessions with staff

another version of the noticeboard

A bigger one just for photos from a special event

This plays before school starts lunchtime and afterschool.

The calendar is a feed from our google calendar the news is Sky as we can't stream BBC any more
