Tado Smart Thermostats

Just wondering if anybody out there has installed a Tado smart thermostat and whether they are saving any money with it? Any feedback on these at all is greatly appreciated.

Not sure if I am saving money with however I have installed one and a new boiler at the same time, we have a log burner so that's on most of the time when cold.

 

What I will say about the tado is that if the app is installed on your smartphone and you forget to turn off the heating it will do this for you and switch the heating back on when you get close.

 

Lots of scheduling can be done for all sorts of lifestyles.

 

I'm pretty sure I am saving money but only been in the property for the summer so hard to judge.

Mine has saved me about 10% in the last year, since they updated the software on the phone side it's been excellent. We hardly notice it anymore, the heating kicks in when we're home if the temp is below the one set in that timezone or we can put it on manual if we want a bit more heat. It just works, which is the best thing I can say about any of this kind of automated tech.

From Amazon review. Basically says you can't turn it off if their data centre gird down or you lose internet connection? Could be :tinfoil: but would concern me, especially as I am on oil, so it would just run through the tank until it was run out.

I've had one 18 months since moving in to a new build. Hard to say how much I'm saving as I have nothing to compare to - but pretty certain I am saving money. It even (eventually) made me find the electricians had wired up the two heating zones the wrong way around!

 

I LOVE the fact that I can just leave the house and not have to worry about timers or anything. Using geofencing and my smartphone it knows I'm away and switches to away mode (temp). Using geofencing it knows when I'm close to home and heats to my desired temp ready for when I'm back.

 

I love that I can change Remotely from anywhere. I once checked it on a train back from London to Sheffield - found my wife had turned it up so remotely turned it back down

 

You can use the wireless sensor to press the button to set the heating on to the last used temp. If the Internet link goes down it will also set to the last known temp I think.

 

At the time tado wasn't multi zone but I want to get one for upstairs now. It's a pain in winter using an bog standard old thermostat controller (I can't work out the timer !).

 

I highly recommend Tado (easy to fit with a new boiler - even for me!)

Mines been dispatched today, can't wait to get it set up, our house has no thermostat currently so this will make a huge difference! Have you guys heard that Tado are bringing out automatic thermostatic radiator valves q3 next year? They will be awesome

Was wondering if there is a "stop producing hot water until next time cycle" button in the app? There are times at home where showers / baths have been had by 7pm and no more hot water is required until the next day so no point having the boiler slaving away until say 10pm, could anyone confirm?

I just leave it on auto to be honest. Occasionally it kicks in but not normally for long.

 

If you need this then might be worth a request to Tado. They do respond on their Facebook page - although features can take a long time to be implemented.

Very similar. But I don't think it's got geofencing / the same level of it as Tado.

 

Out of Hive, Nest and Tado I looked at them all a lot and Tado was the one for me. YMMV

I've just looked on Tado and the bit that connects to the boiler (programmer) seems to be an extra charge... with Hive it isn't. So that immediately put me off.

Friend of mine has one and he saves no money at all with it.

 

His wife is at home 4 days a week with their little one, there is one day where no-one is in the house and then he is with the little one for the weekend and the heating keeps the house at 19 degrees permanently.

 

Literally, the only time he actually uses it over and above what a standard digital programmer could do is to turn it on in advance when they hit the m27 after being up north to see the inlaws. I have no idea why he even has it.

 

Equally have no idea why he is still paying off a £5k push bike he's used 3 times and £20k of finance on a car that's so unreliable he's put more miles on the courtesy car than he has the car he's paying for.

Yeah they've changed the system a little - to allow multi zone I think. Version 1 came as a package then version two was split. Not sore of all boilers need the controller / extension box.

I've never heard of this one but it sounds interesting.

 

I've had a look at the Nest and it seems very good. I also like how all their products link, so say if there was a carbon monoxide leak, the smoke alarm would tell the thermostat to turn off, sound an alarm and if you have a camera it sends you a live feed. It also links in with the Philips smart bulbs and can switch them on in an emergency and make them flash to alert you . Pretty clever system I thought.

I really like the Phillips hue but for a full system it would soon become very expensive. There's also things like physically turning off the light switch isn't so simple - it resets the lamp. This can be fixed by using the hue switches - £50 each!

 

It does have great integration with a lot of things though. And hue, tado and nest all have IFTTT channels. Not sure about Hive

Does anyone use the geolocation presence detection function? My partner and I both have iPhone 4s's and find that it completely eats the battery like you wouldn't believe, don't know if it's just because GPS functionality on older iPhones is more battery intensive than on new versions of the phone but we have ended up not using it because of this, be much better if it would detect if you're connected to your home WiFi network instead of GPS and then enable / disable the heating respectively

Just checked and in the last 7 days tado has used 1 percent it says probably less

 

Running iPhone 6 though
