Room logging in system - a bit like a timeclock

We've been asked to dream up something on the cheap, where by students can scan their id cards when they enter a room and scan it again when they leave. The date, time and id number will be recorded in both instances. It is only going to be used in perhaps four or five rooms. I was thinking of a headless, ancient PC in each room with a bar code scanner attached. I have no idea as to what software to run on these PCs - the time clock systems that I've looked at seem to be way OTT for our needs. Any suggestions most gratefully received.

Yes just a scanner that dumps to a database or sql DB?

Do the kids have cards with barcodes printed on already? If not you'll probably save hassle using RFID instead of perishable printed barcodes

We already have barcodes printed on the plastic photo ids. Basically we want a scanner to dump the info into a db on a server somewhere.
