Expert required : O365 mail flow problem need some advice

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I have my o365 setup as follows

Onsite exchange @school.sch.uk mx record points to lea mail server

O365 students setup as @stu.school.sch.uk mx points to o365 server.

@school.sch.uk is setup in the domain section of o365

@stu.school.sch.uk is also setup in the domain section of o365

I have not setup the onsite exchange as a hybrid due to not having the correct training yet. And believe that adding the @school.sch.uk domain to 0365 is my issue.

My issue is that my student account can not email @school.sch.uk domain as it thinks that @school.sch.uk domain is now in the cloud. (Yes expected) And my on site exchange can not email the @stu.school.sch.uk addresss.

Mail to all other domains are working fine.

All i need right now is my students and staff to be able to email each other. So both systems to be separate for now is this possible with what i current have setup.

90% done just missing connectors on the exchange but have to get this running in the next week hence putting hybrid on hold.

If i remove the @school.sch.uk domain from the o365 domains section will it effect the stu.school.sch.uk domain as i see them as separate domains. This would stop o365 thinking that my onsite exchange is not on the cloud anymore allowing mail to flow.

Thats my thinking anyway.

my admin account is connected to the @school.sch.uk domain if i remove the domain will i still be able to administer o365 or would it be wise to create a backup in the stu.school.sch.uk domain.

I will get the hybrid sorted later.

If you have any experience of removing domains from 0365 your thoughs on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Right I think you need to setup a subdomain entry on your internal dns (if its your AD domain name) that has the same records as the student dns of o365, that should get mail flowing to them at least.

I am not sure about removing the domain of the staff yet but hopefully @EduTech or others can give pointers for that.

Its not my internal domain name its what the lea issued for email. Not sure if thats a good thing or not.

Hope i can get this issue sorted better planning needed on my part but was dropped in it due to a redundancy in the organisation.

Top and bottom is i need my on site exchange to be able to email our students and vice versa either if i have to use the onmicrosoft address for them and ditch using the lea email address.

It may be i have not explained the issue correctly please ask if you need anything clarifying.

Thanks for the reply so late.

I suspect as zerohour mentioned adding the subdomain, and putting the correct mx records in will at least get mail flowing staff to student. If your external DNS mx records are correct, you may find student to staff works. I would look at the docs for hybrid as that's going to be your final solution I would gave thought. Hopefully @EduTech will be able to advise further.

Im thinking the easiest thing would be start again mx records are fine.

On site points to lea servers and o365 points to o365 servers.

The issue for me is having my onsite exchange listed in the domains section of o365 admin console

I will be buying a new domain so I can keep on site and office 365 separate.

the hybrid setup was a bit of a pipe dream and needs to be planned way better.

thanyou to all that have helped. Fantastic community here at edugeek.

I could not do my job without you.

If the stu.school.sch.uk is linked to school.sch.uk as a root domain in Azure AD then you won't be able to remove that domain, but to answer your question yes removing that would allow mail to flow from Students -> Staff Mailboxes on-premise. {If you added school.sch.uk first then I can tell you now that you won't be able to remove it as stu.school.sch.uk will be linked} {Get-MsolDomain | FL will tell you definitely the Root Parameter should be populated with school.sch.uk for stu.school.sch.uk}

I would advise you to setup connectors in Exchange Online and place the domain in Exchange Online for Staff in non-authoritative so that it can be split. This will then allow you to create a rule to say if the mailbox is not found, route the mail via this connector X and you could just say to that connector route to public DNS and that should work or/ send it direct to your LEA Smarthost or/ On-Prem Server.

The same for staff on-prem ideally they need to have a shared namespace for students and be informed that if the mailbox is not on-prem then go to Exchange Online.

I can help you get this setup if you need help, you don't need to go via Hybrid Configuration Wizard to do this.

I hope that helps

James.

Thanks for your reply.

I currently own a.org domain for the school so i am planning on using that for the students. I need to back track on the domain setups done by the lea.

Going to revisit this tomorrow needed to clear my head.

Might take you up on your offer of help.
