ide / scsi card

hello All,

at present we have a scsi card in our server with the system disk on. I would like to add 3 ide disks as well as leave the existing scsi. The system disk would stay on the scsi and the 3 ide disks would be for data. Is there anything i need to consider ebfore i start building?

I would use SATA discs insted of IDE and buy a controller card if the server doesn't support SATA. SATA offers much better performance than IDE for budget storage, and you can do things like RAID with them, which you can't normally do with IDE.

luckily. very nearly!. Case has 2 slots at the bottom, then 3 below the 5.25 bays. so one will have to sit on a static bag in the case.

I assume your PC has two IDE connectors. Bear in mind that two of your harddrives will have to share an IDE connection. If you're planning to set these up in a RAID configuration (I imagine you might be intending to set up a RAID 5 array) you won't get very good performance. As pointed out, a new controller (preferably a proper hardware RAID controller) would help out, or if you can't afford that then maybe you'd be better sticking with a mirrored array of two IDE disks, one on each connector.

Are any of the 5.25 bays free? If so you can get a 5.25 - 3.5 mounting bracket for a few quid.

thanks for all the help guys, its only a wsus and sophos server at present. The data of which both sit on a scsi raid on a scsi card. the ide raid is jsut to store a backup of the asr backups.
