We've got an XML start layout working using a Computer GPO instead of a User GPO. The user GPO was being really inconsistent, but the computer GPO seems to work much more reliably. This does mean all users end up having the same start layout though, but it's better than not having one!

That's interesting, I had to place the windows 8.1 layout in the computer section otherwise certain apps - camera for example - wouldn't work reliably.

For Windows Update have you tried setting the proxy via netsh set http proxy? This worked on Win 8/.1 to allow Metro (sorry the IFKAM) apps to connect via a proxy when they would not when it was only set in IE.

Windows update should work via a proxy regardless if you set a netsh, although I have confirmed the same netsh command works in Windows 10 for Metro Apps also.

Considering the Start Menu on my home laptop has stopped working twice, I wasn't too keen on building an image for a school and the above has definitely made me wait until Easter at the earliest.

Should your start menu stop working (most likely because of Cortana), there's a weird fix for it.

Run - msconfig

Boot tab

Tick Safe Boot and then Network

Reboot and login with affected account

Load up msconfig and deselect Safe Boot

Reboot and Start menu should work again.

One of the strangest fixes to a problem I've come across, but the alternative was to run a powershell script that just sat at 30% for an hour and didn't seem to do anything...

Anyway, hope someone finds the above useful, and I would be very interested if anyone manages to get a Windows 10 image they'd be happy to use across their school!

Same. I'm going to wait until summer next year until I start considering it, but from all these posts I've heard so far it's not sounding great... Fingers crossed the management side of things isn't a flop like 8.1!!!

Can I ask how people have got GPO's onto the server for Windows 10? Do you have Server 2012 or 2008 R2? I copied the 8.1 GPOs from a machine to the server, but I could never get an 8.1 image I was happy with. I'm just trying to build a 10 image now and realised I can't seem to log in as a pupil... it says username or password is incorrect. I think this might be because the pupils don't have passwords?

I had same problem - vanilla win10 enterprise from VLSC ISO. No windows or store updates through explicit proxy on our open wifi. switched to our secure network which uses transparent proxy and it worked fine. After it updated with cumulative update I switched back to open/proxy network and it worked so I suspect it got fixed at some point.

Does anyone have an idea how to block/restrict say the Xbox App on the Start Menu? I don't mean remove it, simply prevent it from running like a traditional .exe

So if you launch the XBOX App, then open Task Manager, attempt to view the file path/location and you're restricted; so I have no way of knowing the file name of the App running.

Any ideas would be much appreciated :)

RSAT is no longer working for me.Bizarrely I had it working on a Window 10 test PC. That naturally failed in the windows 10 'dead start menu' way so I reinstalled.

Now all I get when installing rsat is 'Searching for updates on the computer'. Completely fresh image borked already.

And people thought Vista was bad.

Unfortunately I've tried a basic XML in a computer context (using gpedit.msc) and it still moves the tiles around. It's absolutely useless Microsoft :(

I did some more testing today and it seems that the Computer policy isn't working great either.

It seems to work more reliably than the User GPO - user GPO only ever pinned 1 or 2 tiles, the computer GPO pins 75-100% of tiles depending how it feels! Obviously not ideal though...

well they've done a number on the mail app it now looks like the one in windows 8 so you can see all accounts at once to see how many emails they all have unread in the inbox hopefully it will also fix the your outlook settings are out of date issue still if you click a link in an email it scrolls the email back to the top while opening the website (at least in tablet mode)

Does anybody know how to stop users browsing the network by hitting the Windows key and typing \\domain_name? There's not really anything they can get to, but I'd rather they didn't browse Netlogon and Sysvol.
