Student write access to Student Shared drive

Hi All,

 

At my sites, we have a shared drive that staff have Modify permissions on and students only have read.

 

I'm having more and more staff ask to give students the same permissions as staff to student shared - what are your thoughts?

 

My initial thoughts are "no chance" - but then I thought, maybe just give them write access rather than modify, so they can't delete anything, but all that does is end up with kids saving 10 different versions of the same files as they can't modify the one they created. As they're primary schools, I can't see any issues with kids maliciously deleting one another work, but that doesn't stop it being accidental.

 

Staff do have access to the student's home directories so they can view work etc, but the staff are asking to be able to have a full class save to the same folder, to then allow them to view each others work in certain cases.

 

Any thoughts?

We've got it set up similar to you, the way we've solved this problem is to tell staff to create folders for individual pupils in the area they want (naming them the same as the kids username) and then running a simple script to assign Modify permissions to that folder for the named user.

 

Luckily for us we've only got a few teachers who want to do this so it's not too bad. Giving everyone Modify to a pupils work will probably lead to a few playing silly buggers and deleting each others work (or bits of it) and copy/pasting work to their own stuff, might be less of a problem at Primary than Secondary but still possible.

On the folder share I have it set so that only Staff can create the top level folders.

Then on the students security group I set it so that they can only create folders/files inside.

 

It saves the drive getting in a mess, and means that the creator of the folder can review what's been placed inside and delete as necessary.

 

It also means that students can only delete what they put in the folder, and no one else's work.

do the students need to reference stuff they have put in there once they have put it in there? I've previously set folders up such that within the folder for a specific course there is a hand in folder, The course folder has staff modify, the hand in folder has student write but not read or delete, so they deposit stuff in and to them it goes into a black hole!

One of my bug hates, you tell staff they have access to all student user areas, but they still get the students to email them the work filling up the email server.

No. All you need is one infected student with crypt locker and the entire thing is borked.

Student will also use it to share files, music, viruses and other malicious nonsense.

 

Our shared area is locked down so it will only accept office files - zips, music, videos, text files etc are all blocked.
