Google Chrome not picking up proxy settings

This is a bit of a brain tickler: Google Chrome will not pickup proxy settings if it is launched first after logging into machines. As soon as you open IE and allow it to load the homepage then, and only then, will Chrome start using the proxy. Proxy settings are defined via GPO and we're using an auto configuration script. This problem has been around for ages as it is detailed in this thread on Google Code:

Now here is another tickler: I grew frustrated and decided to statically set proxy settings for Chrome through GPO rather than letting it get them from Windows, and it still does the same damn thing.

 

I am sooooo tired of having to juggle three different browsers because of all the crap that works on one, but not another.

Didn't work for me bud..workaround I have been told is basically setup new GPOs using the Chrome ADMX file and state the proxy in there, just means you end up with GPO for IE and GPO for Chrome messy!

 

I did notice however if I just let chrome sit there for 10 minutes without opening IE it finally works so could be I have another issue completely with things not applying

Just wanted to add a note here to say that this thread led me in the right direction to fixing this. I also noticed that this has only happened at sites where the Chrome ADM templates have been added in but the proxy settings not defined within them. That may be a coincidence but thought it was worth sharing.

Had this start happening randomly at a school at the start of this week. Most strange, I hadn't made any changes to the proxy settings (for months!), and suddenly Chrome refused to work unless users started IE first.

 

As above, forcing the proxy through the Chrome GPO worked.

I have applied the fixed proxy through Chrome GPO but this disables the Chrome option for staff whilst at home to changing the proxy for home use. Changing the IE options has no effect on Chrome now.

If you set the Chrome (and IE/Edge) proxy via a pac (host it @ school if necessary), you shouldn't need to faff around with changing the proxy for home use.

In your IE policy, did you leave 'Automatically detect settings' under the proxy config checked?

 

Updating the Chrome policy templates that I had in AD and recreating the policy to set Chrome's proxy fixed the issue last year, but I just ran into it again a couple days ago. I made the above change to the IE policy above and haven't seen the issue since.
