Printer authorisation code

I have a problem configuring new computers with our printer.

The printer is a ricoh aficio mpc5501 - one of those copiers that do everything

 

The problem is that I can install the relevant driver etc and it all seems to be OK

However - when I try to print it SHOULD come up witha box to type in my code number - but it doesn't - and I can't see any way to get it to do so

 

The current PCs were all set up before I arrived here and there is no documentation. I have tried looking on the WWW but the instruction don't seem to fix the problem - and looking at the old configs that work don't show up anything that I can see that is different

 

Has anyone any idea whjat I need to do to get the printer connecting OK??

Under the 'Detailed Settings' on the Printer Properties, what is the job type? The code isn't already set there is it?

thanks but No - tried that after finding instruction on the WWW and nothing is set up different to normal as far as I can see

You will probably have to build a driver that asks for the code. Ricoh used to do a driver editor. I think they replaced it with this. http://support.ricoh.com/html_gen/util/PDP/PDP.html

We had to get a driver directly from Ricoh for this.

Once you've got used to the Print Driver Packager it's actually a very powerful tool and gives you almost complete flexibility to do what you want with the driver.

 

That said, it is confusing and frustrating at times- I sat down with one of the engineers from our managed printing provider (they sell these Ricohs day in, day out) but it still took us a couple of hours to get the driver how we wanted and tested!

If I've understood your requirements properly, I have this working with a standard Ricoh driver on a 5503 - which is barely any different to the 5501 you have.

 

I installed the Ricoh 5503 PCL6 on the print server and deployed through group policy. To set up controlled printing, I've had to get users to go into the Printing Preferences, which is not ideal, but I put a quick how to together with screen shots and they've all managed.

 

Summary of process is: Open Printing Preferences, go to Detailed Settings tab, click on Job Setup then in Job Type select Locked Print, click on the Details button, choose Windows Login Name in the User ID drop-down and then enter a Password. Click OK, apply etc...

 

Resulting behaviour: send document to print, choose Print function on printer and a folder name with the Windows Login Name is available for all users who have sent a print job, choose name, choose item to print, then when you press print, you are asked for the code you entered in the driver.

 

I have set this up for "high risk" users such as SLT, SENCo and Headteacher. Other users are set to "Hold Print" - this holds the jobs at the printer and the user selects their job from those available, but are not required to enter a password. I chose this option so that teachers can print, but can send someone else to collect the printing.

 

Edit: Can't claim credit for this, we had a very helpful trainer sent out by Ricoh just after the printer arrived and she showed me the process

Right - I've finally sorted this one out - I'm just adding the solution here so that anyone else who gets the same problem can see a solution

 

The software I needed is called Printer Driver Editor - it has been discontinued by Ricoh in favour of something more complicated but you can still get it from elsewhere - of PM me and I can send you the zip file

 

You download the PCL6 driver from Ricoh (or whatever manufacturer you need - I tjink it works with other printers) and then run the driver editor

Open the .inf file from the driver and follow the screens - I just went into the Options Tab and found something to allow a pop up for Authorisation code

 

Then save the file - save as and export create an rcf file which doesn't do anything usefull as far as I can see

 

Then config the printer manually -

add new printer

local printer

tcp/ip connected

 

use the "have disk" option and load the driver that you have changed
