NAS

Please suggest the best NAS - price doesn't matter.

 

Currently have two QNAPs but they've been poor over 3 years.

 

Currently have 1 synology but had a weird problem with users seeing different files / folders on occasions. (Haven't had it for a while but a small put off)

 

I just need it to have live-replication to each other as we currently have live replication between our 2 QNAPS at 2 different sites.

What do you mean by poor for the QNAPs? We've been running one for 4 years and its been 100% flawless. We've just bought a TVS-863+ and 8 bay expansion unit for our backups too, and its been spot on.

We have both both Terastations and Synology NAS mirroring with no probs for years now. Surprised to hear about the QNAP though.

All the disks which came with our QNAPs have died and since been replaced.

 

Firmware errors near the start messed up a lot of things.

 

File Share Permission problems - like now, a 1TB share, I click share to Domain Users and instantly says done, yet no joy! Had this multiple times. (Just had two disks fail on QNAP1 so RAID has gone, and trying to apply permissions on QNAP2 and it's not applying, really frustrating!)

Ah, I never buy a pre-built NAS (wouldn't want to end up with Seagate disks!!). I buy a chassis, then choose the best disks for the job. So, our last one was populated with WD Black disks, and the new one has WD Red disks.

Have you kept the firmware up to date? I've never seen any permission issues with ours.

Yes they've now got WD Reds in... I will do the same, buy my own disks from now on!

 

It's fairly up to date, 4.1.2... Had problems with both in the past. Not had great experiences so I think I want a move away now!

Synology, IME. Probably just as well that price doesn't matter - you do pay for their abilities. Not used QNAP, have used a number of others.

using a couple of Buffalo terrastations (one is linux based the other windows) a few years old and have replaced a disk in one which was a seagate which is what they fit in these (which has more to do with meeting a price point)

consumer drives in a education/enterprise environment may have longevity issues but on the whole pleased with them.

 

the unit reported a problem and the drive was swapped on array rebuilt no one noticed job done.
