tech_guy Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 New year - New ideas.... I opened my mouth and now I'm paying the price - I suggested we look at getting our Minibuses converted to run on vegetable oil as kinda a joke but now it's gathered momentum and I've got to turn it into reality (reality - in Education? Yes I know, I know....!). We've priced it up, looked at how to do the engine conversions, but has anyone out there actually done it yet? Help & suggestions/advice much appreciated.
richard.thomas Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 I thought you were an ICT technician? Are you going to attempt this your self or send it to a garage somewhere for someone else to do it? If it breaks-down now you know it's gonna be your fault
plexer Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Presume you want a company to do the conversion? Biodiesel conversion companies are what you want I would think? Ben
tech_guy Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 Presume you want a company to do the conversion? Biodiesel conversion companies are what you want I would think? Ben Thanks, Ben. Yes we've looked at a few local companies, but they want a load of moolah to do the work. We can get the conversion kits ourselves so we're going to do the older bus first and see how it goes.
mrforgetful Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Where do you get your Veg Oil from when the conversion is complete?
Geoff Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 This site has a lot of info on the subject http://bloomingfutures.com/
richard.thomas Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Someone gets to have fry ups all the time?
rhyds Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 What minibuses do you have? The old LDVs/transits with the peugeot/citroen engines are good, especially ones with Bosch injection pumps, not much work needed at all
tech_guy Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 Where do you get your Veg Oil from when the conversion is complete? From the wholesalers I guess - still have to pay duty though.

K.C.Leblanc Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 I'm not sure about this, but I think the school will have to pay duty on any veg oil it uses as fuel. I know there is an exemption for people who use less then a certian amount of fuel but I think it only applies to private indivisuals. Are you planning to buy clean veg oil or filter used oil?
mrforgetful Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 From the wholesalers I guess - still have to pay duty though. Isn't that only on over 2500 litres though? Is it even much cheaper if you have to pay duty? Stupid Government charge you at every corner makes me angry.
tech_guy Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 Someone gets to have fry ups all the time? Lol I wish. We near had a mutiny when we told the kids we weren't doing chips anymore. Our deepff is now redundant.

We're going to use pure vo and we're going to pay the duty. I know of two individuals (not organisations) who have been caught not paying duty on their vo for their businesses.
mrforgetful Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Apparently we're not doing it to save money we're doing it to 'save the planet'..... Oh all that malarky again.... Well I guess other than the smell it's not really got a drawback. Unlike Biodiesel that's raising food costs and starving more people.
Domino Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 I hate to be negative, but surely if the bus goes boom, and injures someone, with you having done the work that makes you liable....?
tech_guy Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 I hate to be negative, but surely if the bus goes boom, and injures someone, with you having done the work that makes you liable....? Yes. Probably. Bring it on.
ICT_GUY Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Dont Forget to pay your FUEL DUTY! As tax evasion is really frowned apon.
torledo Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Yes. Probably. Bring it on. That's the spirit, tech guy Good luck with the conversion. Sounds like a really interesting project. The kind of project school's doing the motor vehicle nvq's should get their pupils to get involved with......instead all motor vehicle pupils and instructors seem to end up doing is stripping repairable motors with no intention or knowhow of putting them back together.
stephenleak Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 Where do you get your Veg Oil from when the conversion is complete? Turkey Twizzlers and chips back on the school dinners menu, perchance?
tech_guy Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 No chance, thanks to Jamie O it's all this healthy rubbish now.
