XP Repair

What is the command line when an XP disk is inserted to repair the OS within windows..

 

is it d:/setup.exe /spx ?

I dont know what the command line is but I do know that I only have one disk that will run a repair on windows xp. You have to boot from the cd and start the install. It then searches for a an installed os and gives you the option to repair it.

 

I wasted loads of time trying different ones to find one that does it and I think the one that I have has a volume licience key.

The rare times i've repaired XP is the way ricki suggests. Normally I just completely re-install the OS. If there's data that needs saving then I run a live version of windows, or a linux distro, get the data and move it to a network share.

What needs repairing? Can you boot into windows? or does the Boot sector need repairing?

I find sometimes you can just run the recovery console and get away with running chkdsk /p - seems to fix most problems even though nothing to do with the boot sector

w00p for chkdsk... we must use that all the while. It fixes 90% of all the BSOD's or the "missing file..." on boot.

 

Infact I repaired a relativily new dell workstation today with that.

 

I got UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME BSOD just as it went into windows... i figured a bootfix or fixmbr might do the job, but nope chkdsk c: /r

Is there a way of installing Command Consol after you have rolled out the boxes ?
