How much local storage do you provide for students and staff these days?

 

We have been giving students 100mb and staff 200mb since the beginning of time, which is obviously now absolutely rubbish! But our new 24TB storage is now in place so we can afford to be slightly more generous

20GB staff, 2GB students currently (2 may be upgraded soon)

 

Obviously with Dedup now helps reduce a lot of what they use space wise

10GB for staff and 3GB for students plus everyone gets 1TB of OneDrive storage.

No restrictions for staff, however I do monitor them and ask to remove if gets excessive - it's usually the music and drama group with their videos.

Students have 2GB which has always been sufficient.

Students depends on year group - 1 GB in year 7 rising to 4 Gb in year 13.

whatever you give them they will fill it with crap and personal videos and photos from the weddings they've all been to in the summer....

We have just moved everything to w new server with 16b of free space (was 14tb until I setup Data deduplication) Set a 1 tb limit on the shared drives, but I haven't set any limits for staff and students, as I put them all on the same drive, so I would have to use FSRM to set a limit on each individual folder to define the space between them.

 

I think space limits should always been done by a calculation of I have x amount free space, how can that be divided up with room for expansion later on.

Some of our students think it's fun to copy/copy/copy/paste their folders hundreds of times so when they do this taking up drive and backup space, then yes, when they come to me and say it says my drive is full, I tell them to stop messing about!

It's more about that it's difficult backing up huge amount of data! Rather then space issues.

I was referring to the physical drives as I didn't go for a pure SAN option, as I have gone for local storage, that is replicated with microsoft Tiered storage in storage pools, which I have put in some SSDs on RAID and the rest at regular SAS drives and it is giving me awesome performance, and I still have some bays spare, which makes our storage cheap.

We currently have 12TB of local storage for our main file areas. We don't set any storage limit for pupils or staff, and yearly growth so far has been under 1TB, currently up to around 3.5TB of space used. The plan is to get our local storage mirrored to Google Drive to give us another option for editing and to provide a backup / diaster recovery option.

Yep! Either that or they'll create folders with silly names and New folders through to about new folder (300) inside each other !

Sometimes we get... do not open this, told you not to, look in here . etc etc so you keep clicking through!

No I don't - it's something I need to look into. However, can you create exclusions as in some subjects, students copy over resources into their own space so a class of 30 students may all have the same folder/files as resources.

Why would you want to create exclusions?

 

If the copies are modified they'll still work on dedup, they act fully as independant files. Just saving space where they can. e.g. If one deletes it, it won't affect anothers.

The end user wouldn't even know its happening. They won't have the same file name etc.

It doesn't remove any files, it leaves the end part exactly the same, it just points them to the dedup'd data so it's only stored once, thus saving 29 copies space

 

Can be renamed/moved, and wouldn't affect anything.

The file type/name doesn't make a difference.

 

It's the blockdata inside, if 95% of the file is the same it'll remove that 95% and point it to the dedup store etc (Basic wise). That could be a webpage, movie, excel file. If it can make the saving it would
