blu4 Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Well, since the RTM 10240 has been out since yesterday I've decided to finally switch. I love this new OS. Virtual desktops? Yes. Edge? Kind of. Simplicity? Yes. What are your thoughts on it? Btw. SIMS works on it just fine (if you're scared of upgrading) Edge keeps crashing on me and it won't accept Firefox favorites- duh.
Gatt Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 There is a bit of confusion as to whether 10240 is the actual RTM build or not At first I thought it was due to the removal of the TP watermarks, but there is a lot of contradictory stories online...
blu4 Posted July 17, 2015 Author Posted July 17, 2015 It's less than two weeks till the release date- It better be the final version.
Arthur Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 There is a bit of confusion as to whether 10240 is the actual RTM build or not 10240 was the build that PC manufacturers got, so I reckon that counts as RTM. I read somewhere that there is going to be a newer build on the 29th when it's officially released though.
bossman Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Excerpt from the "Computer" magazine, "Windows 10, Microsoft's next big operating system, has been released to manufacturing ahead of its scheduled 29 July launch. According to reports, build 10240 will be used as the final release-to-manufacturing copy, which PC makers will load onto new machines. It's also the version that millions of existing Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 installs will automatically download when the new operating system is released at the end of the month. Just what I have read
Michael Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Even if build 10240 is RTM, what version of Windows 10 is it? Home, Pro, Enterprise or Education, or is it all of them depending what serial you enter?
Arthur Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Unless I am reading too much into it, the following sentence implies that we might receive something other than 10240 on the 29th? http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/07/15/build-10240-now-available-for-windows-insiders-in-fast-and-slow-rings Hi everyone, today we are releasing a new build to both the Fast and Slow rings. We’re just about two weeks away from beginning to offer Windows 10 to the world, as Terry detailed here. Over the past few days we’ve been preparing our release pipelines and processes, and this build is one step closer to what customers will start to receive on 29/7. For example, you’ll notice with this build that the desktop watermark is no longer there (you can still do Search > Winver to see your version number. or is it all of them depending what serial you enter? I think so.
blu4 Posted July 17, 2015 Author Posted July 17, 2015 Even if build 10240 is RTM, what version of Windows 10 is it? Home, Pro, Enterprise or Education, or is it all of them depending what serial you enter? I think it's just windows 10, no fancy versions of it- just as it is.
gshaw Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 I want to put it on one of my "live" devices but seems like I'll have to hold off until the 29th to make sure it gets licensed via the free upgrade rather than as a Windows Insider
Michael Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Plus there's no RSAT or Group Policies as yet, so it's a bit pointless at this point in time.
SovietRussia Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 I have not updated yet at home - anything new that is cool with it?
Gatt Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Start Menu! New command prompt (copy /paste / full screen) Virtual Desktops Clippy Cortana - Oh wait - you said "Cool Stuff..."
zag Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Pretty good release, but still a bit confused for the desktop user with the start menu. Overall I like it and been using it for a few months. EDGE is not ready for release as its buggy, but it is fast! Its basically what windows 8 should have been. Sad that there are not many other "Big" features that I can see other than native FLAC support.

Home, Pro, Enterprise or Education, or is it all of them depending what serial you enter? More to the point, how do you activate it? None of my previous keys work... I have not updated yet at home - anything new that is cool with it? Start Menu! Publicised SM: I can't find a picture of my home Start Screen atm, so best I can do is an older version of the one the children get here on W8 machines: Actual SM: (Which I can't currently take off full screen because I can't activate). Yes, the school colour is red. Not sure why it's an improvement.
Arthur Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 More to the point, how do you activate it? None of my previous keys work.... https://twitter.com/GabeAul/status/621395106789093376 We've removed ISOs and keys. At this point there isn't a supported clean install path. Just upgrades from here until 29/7. 1
LeMarchand Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Thanks - but why make certain functions dependent on activation? Grrr...
Valyyn Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 I've got Windows 10 installed at home and at school. Loving it in both, but in school I cannot get it to update and I'm out of ideas. Just sits there saying "Downloading updates 0%". Have even tried a fresh install from an older version, but no joy I'm guessing it must be a proxy issue, but our Smoothwall seems to be set up OK and the council said they're definitely not blocking anything on theirs. Bit frustrating

Valyyn Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Ah maybe. Problem is, I'm stuck on the one before that (the last one they released an .iso for - 10162 )
Valyyn Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 D'oh, yeah then, there's no iso for that, so I'm stuck here on 10240 until they release the isos on (or around) launch day. At least I know it should hopefully work after then though

Bit frustrating Someone posted this solution which works for me but not everyone: Download PSTools Run the following as an Administrator, which should launch powershell as the system user. CD Wherever you extracted PSTools to\PSTools psexec -i -s Powershell.exe Check for updates etc and start them downloading, before they fail run the following in the Powershell window you opened as the system user Get-BitsTransfer | Set-BitsTransfer -ProxyUsage Override -ProxyList SchoolProxy:Port I found I have to run the PowerShell command more than once sometimes. Basically, if the download count stays at 0% give it another try (or two). 1

Seriously, it's been bugging me for months not having it working and this worked first time! Thanks
