If you want to use a Magic Triangle setup for OS X logins, Profile/Workgroup Manager lockdown of machines and accounts etc then you'll need it on your Windows domain, as part of your existing AD/DNS domain. If it's just for iPad management it can be more separated from AD.

we are dual booting our imacs so its for that

Then you'll probably want to setup a proper Magic Triangle, with the Windows and OS X installs added to the AD domain, and the OS X install also added to your Open Directory and managed with Profile Manager.

There are various documents around on how to set this up from the server/client side, but it's pretty straightforward with a guide.

Have a look at Configure Profile Manager On Yosemite Server (Yosemite running the Server app) | krypted.com

we use AD for authentication, DNS and storage.

our apple servers "piggy back" on to the existing domain and manage Mac / MDM specific settings for anything Apple. Also the Apple caching services are really handy too.

HEY,

I once worked in an entirely Apple Mac school and it was definitely a challenge!

You want to setup the OSX server normally, setting up domain etc, although don't use the mac server for DHCP or DNS, it doesn't work proprely and Apple know this!

You use workgroup manager to setup accounts and policies, or a plugin if you want it to bind to a windows AD if you want them both on the same network.

Workgroup manager is a very powerful tool. You can put computers into groups or you can target them invidually. What ever you do, don't delete the guest group! I've been in that position before and it took down most of the computers!

Is profile manager in newer releases of OSX? Or is it downloaded

Profile Manager is standard on OS X Server. The front end is web based so you can access it easier than WGM.

WGM can still be downloaded but won't run on anything past 10.9.

Yeah, it's dated and we have found it doesn't push proxy settings any more which is a pain. Otherwise, installed and working on 10.10 server. Don't think we did anything magic to make it work, but we had to reinstall WGM it when it moved to 10.9 (this server has gone from 10.6->10.7->10.8->10.9->10.10 in-place each time).
