Ubuntu 7.10 spurious prompts to install flash

I have installed the Flash plugin but every time I go to a website with Flash content (such as EduGeek) I am still prompted to install additional plugins.

I had this recently... a real PITA!

 

In the end I purged the Flash plugin installation and removed the ~/.mozzila directory. A quick re-nstall of firefox and then an installation of Flash seemed to fix the problem.

Well here is the answer. It appears that a recent update to the Adobe flash plugin has run into a fault in the Ubuntu package authentication mechanism.

 

The revised package was pulled for having bugs of its own particularly for Konqueror users.

 

I ended up using a bodge involving pasting libflashplayer.so library into firefox's plugin folder. Unfortunately opening page with flash conent pushes up firefox's CPU usage and makes the browser unresponsive. I've also noticed something rather odd. If I scroll the page, the firefox window greys out as if the Ubuntu is about to into suspend/shutdown.

Another way around this is to download Flash Player from Adobe:

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

Get the tar.gz file. Un-tar this to a folder on the desktop, open up a terminal window & CD to the folder on the desktop. Then just run this command:

sudo ./flashplayer-installer

Sorted mine out.

 

Edit:

One thing I forgot was that when you are asked for the folder, do not go for the default /usr/bin/mozilla, you want to use /usr/lib/firefox instead.
