I had the demo for Progresso a few years back, this was before the "troubles" when it went a bit quiet on the Progresso front.

Gotta say that it was a radical departure from Facility CMIS, but in a good way, it looked like a properly modern MIS and the vast amount of stuff you could make it do was impressive.

Stuck with SIMs at my new job, it's not the nightmare I was led to believe it would be, but I regularly curse the 1990s interface.

Hi guys - the census reports that are required for free schools, whilst not quite as bad as Academies, can be a nightmare and require a huge amount of manual work (weeks and weeks) if your MIS cannot extract the data and pop it into the exact spreadsheets that the DfE are expecting.. even for 72 pupils and they have a tendancy to change the validation and requirements of these spreadsheets with very little notice. The returns are 4 times a year.

What are the differences from a maintained / academy census PRastall?

On Census I don't think there are differences for a free school. It all becomes complex for a convertor when suddenly data has to be excluded for dates prior to the start date of the school. Finance reports are a very different for academy/free schools - think Government Department style! i.e. huge!!

Census reports are the same for the independent sector too. Free schools will have the same finance reporting requirements as academies as, basically, they are an academy with no preceding maintained school.
