Has anyone had any issues with Roaming Profiles?

 

From the first release of Windows 10, they worked quite well. The following number of builds then broke them until the last build and the current build 10130 where things improved. I've been testing Windows 10 with Server 2008 R2 and run into the issue that all the Apps in the Start Menu get greyed out after domain join. The roaming profile creates fine and sets the permissions on the profile folder on the server perfectly, but start menu just falls apart.

 

I've tried this with UAC on all settings but I always get the same result. It's a pain that we can't use RSAT yet too so can't see what extra policies are available.

 

Is there any workaround for this or something extra that needs setting to get Roaming Profiles to work?

 

Any suggestions or help would be good.

Why not wait until the official release as I believe in the enterprise option it will include group policy management of the start menu/tiles.

Did you create a .v5 default network profile since Windows 10 won't be able to use the .v2 profiles designed for Windows 7?

Hi Arthur,

 

The .V5 profile got created automatically with the correct permissions as I'd expect, but it's just the Apps/Tiles/Search that don't work once you log in with that profile. I've tried different permissions (everyone full control etc) to eliminate possibilities but no matter what I try, it's not playing ball. I know it's early days, but I just wanted to try and be ahead of the game to see how Windows 10 would perform in a domain environment.

 

For info, I'm not using the Enterprise version, just the standard 64bit UK version.

 

I've read a lot of stuff saying that Windows 8 had the same issues in it's pre-release stages, so hopefully Microsoft will sort it out for release.

does it work as expected if you specify no profile in ad (so a local profile?)

 

just a thought are you redirecting app data to the same place as your user has win7/8.1 appdata?

What server OS are you using out of interest? Did you use standard GP's as you would for Windows 7/8 for roaming profiles? Special permissions?

i have been running windows 10 on a few machines and this weekend i have enabled roaming profiles, all appears to work well excluding the fact that the start menu doesnt roam, when logging onto a new machine the roaming profiles applies fine but the default start menu for windows 10 is applied so im forced to again re-arrange all apps and short cuts, has anyone experienced this and if so did you manage to make the start menu roam? i have a few different machines thats used by different users and its going to be a pain resetting the start menu on each machine that's used. i realize there is a powershell command that can be run to generate an xml file so this can be pushed out via group policy but i would ideally need to update the start menu when required and if the xml\gpo is used it locks the start menu and dont really want to be generateing multiple xml files each time i add an icon.

I have noticed the Start Menu reset on login too, unfortunately haven't found a way around it as of yet. Out of interest to see if it is part of the same issue, when you click the default Microsoft Apps, do they turn grey at all and refuse to run?

no they run fine, have no issues running apps just the start menu is defaulted. today I have setup a start menu with everything I need, I then run the below in PowerShell, I then setup a GPO targeting only myself and logged onto a number of machines, the start menu along with roaming profile was applied. I then removed the GPO and logged off and back on again on all the machines and the start menu specified within the XML was retained. bit of a work around if you need to set a specific start menu for a group of users, alternatively you can update the default users profile start menu per device so anyone who logs on will receive the updated start menu. still looking at option as would prefer the start menu to roam but reading further it looks like Microsoft have remove the roaming start menu 10, why they remove features in newer versions of windows is beyond me.

Export-StartLayout -Path \\path\name.xml

I have an issue with Windows 10 and Roaming profiles. First time the user logs in it creates the .v5 profile on the server.

When I try to open it says I don't have permission and when you click the continue button is says you need to go into the security options, and take ownership.

 

Whats the solution to this, as don't have this issue with .v2 profiles and the gpo item to add administrators to roaming profiles is enabled.

If I log on without the profile specified in AD, the apps load.

 

Any ideas? I am a bit stumped - I have checked the AppData (Roaming) GPO redirection but I'm not sure that's relevant....it certainly doesn't help!

Are you using AppLocker at all?

Has anyone had any issues with the store/ modern apps?

 

I've just got a delivery of computers with 8.1 preinstalled... yay.... so am just jumping them to 10 to save the headache, but all of my modern apps and store tiles are greyed out/dont launch when using a domain user, I'm suspecting its the redirected appdata on the users? but the only error it gives is basically the store won't load, contact your admin to reinstall/repair, I've did some googling ran some powershell commands etc and got no further.

 

 

Im just waiting for a licence upgrade for parallels then ill be playing around on a vm and a test ad policy - the computers themselves work fine however with everything else

Cheers for this it worked a treat. Redirected appdata was where I was looking initially.

still no luck here :(

 

Im starting to think its the way i have app data redirected thats interfering... one of the upper echelons has an age old copy of acrobat that doesnt support UNC paths which had to WORK so i redirected it to a drive letter ad never got around to making a separate policy to revert everyone else back... think ill do that now and play with a vm!
