Hi! Given the fact the jammers are forbidden all over EU and that turning an entire room into a Faraday cage is not possible are there other options that can help a teacher preventing his students from cheating especially with devices like those eardrum ear pieces that use EM induction and which you take out from your ear with a magnet? Is there any tool like a cell phone detector that warns when near the cheater's ear? Or are phone detectors of any use in this situation (if the phone is nowhere near the student)?

And is it possible to detect a cell phone which is on but on stand-by (not during a call)?

Thanks!

We've discussed painting all the walls (and probably the ceiling) with "magnetic" paint before - just paint with iron fillings in. That might do quite well at blockiong most signals, plus it makes the walls capable of having fridge magnets and so on attached to them.

^ Problem with the above, is that blocking 'signal' doesn't stop someone from having offline documents full of information on their devices.

Out of interest, why has the question been raised with you ? have you had many incidents of people using what sounds like spy grade equipment in exams ?

We tend to just make all pupils put their phones and devices into a clear plastic or cardboard box here on entry into an exam regardless, last exam had a child putting his bluetooth speaker into the box too.

This is not a technical issue. This should be down to the people at the school making sure that they don't cheat. IE classroom management (or exam room management). If others where doing the job correctly would this come up?

Airport invasive porno x-ray security machine, metal detectors and 1:1 exam invigilators.

But seriously, not really. If someone is going to spend that much money and go to those lengths to cheat, they're likely going to do it with locally-hosted material (tiny bluetooth earpiece and an MP3 player full of recorded notes for example) rather than using something that pushes out a typical cellular signal.

I've got a lot of sympathy with this point of view:

Google 'should be allowed in examinations' - BBC News

I don't think that's a good idea at least for schools of medical profile.

That's already been tried. They started to come with two phones one of which they hand over while still being in the possession of another. If only they'd spend half of the time studying from exams, instead of trying new ways to cheat...

We recently added smart watches to banned items.... Thinking no one would have one yet... Seems atleast 1 student already has an apple watch....

Let them cheat if that's what they want to do they will always find away but they are doing nothing but a disservice to themselves.

Unfortunately 'disservice to themselves' means nothing. Cheating hurts the businesses they join later on down the line, and other students who legitimately sit the exams. If employers are going to accept the qualifications we have them take, they need to be able to trust that the results are an accurate portrayal of the person's knowledge. If we 'allow' (or simply just 'don't stop') cheating, then those results cease to be an accurate representation and with that, the qualifications of everyone else who didn't cheat are rendered worthless.
