Apart from a few staff Surfaces we will be avoiding Windows 8.1 and moving over directly to Windows 10, probably in the Summer of next year. Even then it will be phased in with a lot of the school staying on 7 for a while longer.

I think they ought to have gone about it differently - release the ISO for free and provide a key upon registration with a valid copy of Windows. That way, the ISO would have been torrented within minutes making it available to all immediately, reducing the load on their own servers.

Maybe this will be the case when the ISO is released and you'll be able to use the media of a previous install to validate like you have in the past.

It's ok for us VL users, but many users don't have media for their OEM Windows installations. The upgrade route Microsoft have taken seems ok to me. People can just wait a day or two.

I think if you opted to get the Win 10 update it has been slowly downloading something in the background so the servers should not get bogged down on launch day, at least that was the info I read on some website and it could be totally nonsense.

I had something similar, but there was a way to get them to install with a bit of perseverance.

I will install it on my office computer, but won't roll it out to everyone until I see how it performs. I'll probably put it on the 2 Windows 8 PCs we currently have in school too.
