Reset user profile

One of our users profiles has become corrupted.

 

I have seen before somewhere about deleting their profile along with a registry key, but can't seem to find it anywhere. Anyone able to shed any light?

Local client C:\users"username" folder, server based "profile folder", and reg key is

 

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

 

(Find which one under it is their unique ID and delete that)

 

Assuming Windows 7 here, as it's local on machine not server (seeing your forum choice)

Local machine so whatever client you're getting them to log onto next. (Win7)

 

remember they need to log onto the one with the deleted key or they'll re-upload a dodgy profile to the server

(i dont currently have access to a pc with their profile on, the other two in this room are in use, and no one else uses mine) so will try when i get a chance.

You can do it on one in your room that's no problem, just needs to be clean of their profile/key, so when they (you) log on it it makes a new profile and uploads that to server

Assuming their profile folder is just the .v2 one? not all of it (not that i guess it matters, we dont have xp here now)....

I...

1) deleted their user folder off the Local Machine

 

2) deleted their username.v2 folder

 

3) deleted the entire reg key for their user id on the same local machine as step 1

 

4) logged on as them on that machine....

Two things we do is to replace the Ntuser.dat file with one from a working profile (need to enable visible system files) and use delprof to clear all the local profiles.

That should be working correctly, I take it they aren't logged on somewhere else so might have re-uploaded a bad one in middle?

Not to my knowledge, i asked them half hour ago if they were logged on anywhere and they said no, and i had mentioned for them not to try to logon anywhere...

 

should i delete their profile folder completely? rather than just the .v2 one?

Looking into it, it hasnt even recreated a v2 folder at all....

I always do just in case somethings silly, but as you said shouldn't matter if no XP machines.

 

Did it re-create the profile on the server with lots of rubbish in? If so they'd be logged on, or is ti pretty clean?

There's no folder, event vwr on the machine shows user profile service errors event ids 1511 and 1521

May I suggest DelProf2? Run that on the PC in question.

Seems to be quicker and more reliable in my experience than manually doing it, and has various options for deleting one / all / excluding certain ones.

 

 

 

Failing that, it can take a while to load but built into win7 theres a tool. Just search the start menu for "Configure advanced user profile properties"

Yep I use it, as it saves faffing in the registry and I can never remember the key!

Forgive me if I'm pointing out the obvious, but have you tried restarting the PC to make sure nothings got a lock on the reg key?

point away, i have given it a reboot though yes. i just logged on locally and the key isnt there now though (even tho it was under my Domain logon, weird)

Nope, even on my pc where they havent logged onto before it's doing the same thing, logging on with a temporary profile.

 

i think im going to copy their work folder somewhere, and try to delete account and start from scratch, they leave this term anyway, so even if i have to set them up a different account for them to use it'll do the job.

It's just very frustrating this isnt working!

Oh so the issue is across multiple machines? Sorry, I think I'd misread the question, as I thought it was just on the one computer it was causing difficulties.

 

I'd probably do as you've said too, and just make them a new account and copy work across.

Even easier than deleting the reg key by hand or with another tool...

* Windows Key + Pause/Break to bring up System Properties

* Advanced System Settings (on the left)

* User Profiles section, Settings button (in the middle)

* Find the user in the list and click Delete

 

Does it all for you, then you just need to clear out the .v2 folder on the server (make sure you unhide system files etc.) and get them to log on at that machine again so it can recreate a clean profile.
