Cannot Turn Off Server. Failed to Change State (Hyper-V)

Hi folks,

 

A vital DC is refusing to shut down this morning, after locking up when trying to close down Active Directory.

 

Currnetly it's stuck on "Please wait for the User Profile Service".

 

When I try and "Turn Off" I get an error that "The application encountered an error while attempting to change the state of 'SERVER'. 'SERVER' failed to change state. The operation cannot be performed while the object is in its current state."

 

I can't find much in Google, but what I can find suggests this will be stuck like this.

 

I'm somewhat incensed that Hyper-V won't let me turn it off, but equally I need a solution.

 

My current plan is to copy the VHDX and create a new VM based on it and see what happens.

 

Failing that I'll do a whole VM restore from a day or two ago and see if that can be resurrected.

 

Any other ideas?

We had one of these a few weeks back and only way we could find online to do it was migrate all other machines off the HOST. Kill the services for HyperV, then delete the config file that relates to that VM (There's a folder of them on the HOST). Restart services and reimport the machine from the files. Faff

 

* Edit - We found couldn't restore from backups even as the backups (Veeam at least) tries to delete the old VM first and obviously HyperV goes noooooo!

Powershell from an admin prompt with Stop-Vm? Probably throw in the -Force and -TurnOff parameters to try to make it really turn off. If not then @Steve21 probably has the right idea.

I migrated all the VMs and shutdown the host. Of course the host got stuck as well shutting down, so after waiting 20 minutes I turned it off manually. That restored the VM to being available on the other host, and it powered up without issue. Phew!
