tmcd35 Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Mmm, 4K plays fine, 8k stutters at around 5fps and lots of buffering. Still can't say it matters, I'm pretty sure my monitor, like my TV at home, is suck at 1080p. How much are those 8k sets now?

It's an optical illusion: a fine grain structure gives the illusion of a sharper image. So by showing an image with zero grain, followed by one with a fine grain effect, your eye sees more definition and associates that with sharpness. I'm sure I've used all sorts of incorrect terminology there, but open up Photoshop/GIMP and play with the sharpness tool and you'll see what I mean

Unless it's the cinema trying to make their main films look better? (In which case cleaning the optics might help more!)

I have faith that when my new GPU arrives I'll be able to do it on my home machine. Who am I kidding? Of course I won't be able to. Not on a single GPU. But still

It's a 22" 4K monitor, but if I actually have it at 4k, my mouse pointer is tiny and I find it hard to actually do anything. So I run it at.. Whatever the resolution below 4k but above HD is.

What's the point of having a bigger resolution if I'm just going to make everything as big as it was on the old resolution? Might as well have just keep the old one which takes a lot of pressure off the GPU when gaming. A solo card struggles to maintain 4k, so I might as well run it at 2k and get a solid 60fps.

A solo card struggles to maintain 4k, so I might as well run it at 2k and get a solid 60fps. 4k with scaling would be sharper than running a lower resolution, though, because if you run at 1440p on a monitor 2160 pixels high, it has to sort of smear each logical pixel over 1.5 real pixels and it just looks horrible. The only lower resolution you could get away with is 1080p, because that's a factor of 2x so it all lines up nicely. I'm not suggesting you run your desktop in 1080p, but you can certainly runs games at 1080p for dem framerates and have it look good.

Once my 980Ti arrives I won't be running anything in 1080p ever again Maybe I'll revisit 4k with scaling, I can always downscale my games to 1440p in the options menu. But I did try 4k and scaling didn't increase the size of my mouse pointer.. Unless I was looking at the wrong options? But looking at the link @Arthur posted, I was not.
