We have a under spec'ed HP server not doing alot. But we want to start using it more. (more hyper-v)

Its current spec is:

Xeon E5 2407 @ 2.2

8GB ram (PC3-10700 ECC Unbufferd???)

3x 1TB 7200RPM in Raid5

Would it be possible to add 2nd processor and add loads of ram?

Thanks

It's possible, yes. Upgrade kits for Proliants are generally very expensive - I did our last one by getting the parts separately from Ebay (CPU, then heatsink, then fans) which cost a fraction. If you have the budget for it, totally possible. If you're looking to use this for Hyper-V, I highly recommend more storage if you're sticking to DAS - so that you can separate VM disks with the host, and you can also separate VM OSs from storage. Ditching RAID 5 would help.

You can upgrade them to two procesors, we did that with ours, we have 2 x quad core xeons and 96gb of ram in each of ours as they are our hyper-v nodes.

We got ours in as part of the order though, didnt add in afterwards, but looking inside them its easy enough to add in to them and remove the placeholders.

RAM on servers tends to be horrible priced for ECC SIMMS

Sorry mate, Gen 8 is a little too new for me. The only E5 Xeons I've currently got are E5-2697 V2, but the're like a grand each and already allocated to some Z820s.

I can help you out with cheap DDR3 10600R if you need it though :)
