Hey folks, been a while. Help.

 

Looking for some guidance, as my brain is fried.

 

I'm looking for a full functioning wireless (MAYBE MAYBE MAYBE wired) solution to cover all of my property.

 

Im looking into replacing my BT HH3 and Openreach modem with the TP Link TD-W9980 Modem Router combo, or keeping the openreach modem and buying a AC1750 Wireless Dual band router. That in itself is a pain in the backside to decide which route to take, thus any advice would be beneficial.

 

Secondly, i need full 'no lag no hassle' wireless to be operational around the property. If, (unlikely) the router covers the house for wireless, i'm wondering how i would cover the building at the back of the garden (about 50 - 60 meters away)?

 

I was thinking about a repeater? Not sure how effective it would be. Maybe APs? But then i wouldn't want to trail a cable that far. I'd be looking for a fully functioning wireless system to the AP at the back of the garden? If possible?

 

If i had to, and there wasn't any other options, i'd look into ploughing up the back with a trench to the front, and chuck in a cat 7 and hope it lasts and remains future proof.

 

So...... Help meee

Hey Sunny delight

 

Do you have power on the same phase to your out building? Home plug is pretty good nowadays - I run some Solwise units running at 600Mbps and they're not the bottleneck on my network They also do a version which runs at twice the speed - not as good as an Ethernet link, but much better than a wireless extender.

 

Personally I'd keep the separate modem - it gives you loads more options on routers. I run a set of 3 unifi APs wish covers my house comfortably Thick walls rather than massive house....

I've used quite a few Devolo homeplug kits, they do a 1200 mbps Wireless AC kit now as well. Failing that what about doing a free webinar for one of the wireless system providers (Meraki or Aerohive to name two) who might provide a free AP as a reward........stick it in a window at the back of your house and see if it reaches?

I've recently installed one of these for a customer. Asus DSL-AC68U

Wireless in the house where they didn't get it before (beam forming) and an increase in speed connected to BT.

I was given a Mikrotik RB2011UiAS-RM and a Unifi AP, I added a Draytek ADSL modem. I have been using that setup at home now for a year and have been very happy. It may seem overkill for a home network, but it offers serious stability and flexibility. It also has the advantage that you can upgrade individual components as needed. I would never go back to an integrated modem/router/wireless solution.

I have a wireless extender from Maplin which creates a second SSID and sits in the middle of the house communicating to the router at the top of my network via wireless. Anything for gaming is either wired or in the same room as the router though.

 

Works like this

 

[WIRELESS ROUTER] ---CAT5---> [PC]

\----------------------------WLAN----> [EXTENDER]-----WLAN2----> [DISTANT DEVICE]

 

(Nearby wireless devices connect to the router directly).

Some a single, the largest is 3 Pro's and and outdoor for the Garden/Patio.

Some of these have wifi controlled HiFi and more than 30 devices in use around the house!

I've got one that has 3 Pro's in a flat! (It's a big flat overlooking Hyde Park)...

All cloud managed on an Azure Hosted server.

My own includes an NS5 bridge to an AP in my workshop where I have CCTV back to the house.

This is pretty much what I run... 2 Unifi pro (again, thick walls.) and an outdoor to cover my garage/garden. This then connects back to a pair of deliberant propellor5 which bridge back to my parents house 500m away. They have a standard BT home hub, which seems fine.

I run three UAPs in my home (yes two would be sufficient, but...) and a Draytek 2830 ADSL Router. Three floor home, ground and middle floors connected by external Cat5e, middle and top via a pair of Zyxel 500meg powerlines. The unifi controller runs on a Raspberry Pi and I have three SSIDs and VLANs. One for adults, one with filtering and time control for the kids and a third for guests.

 

After what @m25man said, I've just totted up my device count... 26, or 30 if you include the APs and the router as devices. I don't think its hard to hit 30+ devices these days.

You can set different vlans for different SSIDs. Your switch and/or router will need to be aware also however.

at the other end of the scale i have a couple of Dlink AP's connected via a home plug kit to my "backbone" switch and router. (its a small flat)

serves about 3-5 wireless devices and a couple of pc's and a NAS.

planning on adding a smoothwall / pfsense box for shits and giggles

Yes, I have Guest and lab networks as well as my main home network running on one Unifi ap. Routing, and captive portal for the guest network are done on the Mikrotik.

Okay guys and gals, so....

 

To start off with, it would be better me just getting a new router to replace my Home Hub 3. - Done. Will look into this today.

 

I have read into the 'plug' socket wireless connections, but have found mixed reviews on them, more leaning towards negative comments.

 

As i'm not that... how can i put it... networky, what is being recommended for the coverage of my house (bar the new router) and how would i bridge a connection from the back of my house to the back of the garden (53 meters (rounded up) measured today) / How could i have a complete property with wireless coverage?

 

My budget is around £500 give or take £100. As stated, i'm looking for a futureproof and robust design with no flaws.

 

Something like:-

 

House - Router > AP / Router > AP x2 (one for downstairs near the back of the house and one for upstairs?)

Outdoor - AP x2 (one on either side of my fence panels) linked from the other house AP? (Is that possible?)

Outdoor v2 - AP Which then bridges a connection to the back building

Back building - AP / Router?

 

I dunno how i'd go about it? Again, not too network savvy.

 

Edit: @jmak Thanks for asking. Haven't started yet as i passed everything on the assessment bar my mathematics exam (Stupid 4%). I'm going to have to retake that and only that in a few months, then i can get going along the process of becoming a pilot

 

Currently been refurbishing the house, pain in the backside, rather be working lol
