Anyone had a kidney transplant?

On Friday last week I was informed that my kidneys are failing (been expected since I was a teen), and will have failed fully within a year to 2 years, so I will need to have dialysis/transplant sooner rather than later.

 

So, has anyone who works in schools IT here had a kidney transplant and continued to work in schools IT?

I havent needed it myself, but my late grandmother went down the dialysis route (she got kidney failure late on in life through diabetes and was deemed to be ineligible for a transplant because of age and other health problems), she did not fancy having the dialysis machine at home and the responsibility of going on it everyday, (they were in their 60s when first informed and very non-technical) the local hospitals around here tend to offer shifts to people to go on it 3 times a week with regards dialysis, so people in office jobs tended to go onto the evening slots with it after working from taking my gran back and fore over the years. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for my gran.

 

The woman who she became friendly with while on dialysis had a transplant earlier in life and was free of dialysis for nearly 15 years and lived and worked normally throughout that period just taking the anti-rejection medication, the operation wasnt that bad too she told my gran.

My brother in law works in IT for Barclays bank, and he's been on dialysis for the past 3 years whilst waiting for a willing matching donor for a kidney. He has dialysis on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. He is 28 and is expected to live into his late 40s if he doesn't get a new set of kidneys. He works still but doesn't exert himself too much, and has 2 of the afternoons off that he gets the dialysis (its been amended in his contract). He still advises from home whilst having the dialysis done as the process is around 4 hours a time. I'll see about getting his contact info for you.

My Aunt got told 2 years ago that her kidney was failing unfortunately she was only born with one, whether this makes the way she is a lot worse with the only one she has failing but she is also on dialysis nearly everyday of the week and she is certainly not in a state to work yet she has her up days and her downs but like I said I think that's because she only has one.

I got my current job working in a college shortly after receiving a kidney transplant. I was very open about it on the application and in the interview. Had to have a meeting with occupational health, but have never really had any issues doing the job.

 

I did work while on dialysis, but it was tough, hemo especially can leave you with very little energy. I switched to CAPD using a machine at home overnight. This keeps your days free, keeps you away from the hospital and gives you more freedom to travel.

Thanks everyone. Its early stages of the process at the moment. I've got a referral on its way to Southmead Hospital where things will move along more. I've got a few people who have offered to get checked for compatibility too which is great.

 

I've been expecting it for a long time to be honest, as I was diagnosed with "Alport's Syndrome" when I was a young teen and told that it would likely happen in my early 20s. I've made it past 30 so I've done well really! Main issue right now is anxiety!

My mother has had a kidney transplant, I believe, owing to a traffic collision where she was in the back of a car with a lap belt on. From the little I know, once you've actually had the transplant* you're good to carry on with your normal life. As long as she takes her anti-rejection medicine she's completely healthy. She can even still drink alcohol. I can't see why you wouldn't be able to return to IT once you're all healed.

 

* this includes the mandatory 'Don't be an idiot' healing period.

I have a friend who is now 20 years on his transplant, but he is unable to work as he is prone to getting every bug going so when he tried to work he spent most of the time off ill. For example, he gets gout constantly.

 

A study done by the US govt has the number at around 59% of post-transplant people able to work.

Thought I'd update on this. Had an appointment about 4 months ago, where I was told my kidney function had shot back up from in the 40s up to 75.

 

Since then, I've now developed kidney pain in both kidneys in the last 2 weeks so am awaiting an appointment to find out what is going on, as there's no sign of infection. Really quite uncomfortable/in pain at the moment. This Easter break couldn't come soon enough!

 

Hoping its just another blip!
