Server/SAN and Backus

Hi All,

 

I am looking at virtualising our physical servers here over the summer and am interested to find out what others have in place.

 

I have provisionally specced the following

 

2 x VM host

2 x SAN switch

1 x SAN

 

1 x tertiary backup server - to hold 14 full backups - circa 1 per server and 13 incrementals per server (using VEEAM)

 

1 x NAS for longer term backups using VEEAM

 

Is this on par with what others have inplace or am I under speccing things.?

I have 3 x VM host due to the size of my school and thus VM estate.

 

Currently Veeam to tertiary backup server (36TB local storage, 48GB RAM) which can theoretically run Veeam's live DR hosting - only problem is, the local storage is full of the last 3 weeks backups so I've nowhere to restore tapes onto if I need to restore from further back.

 

Never under-estimate the amount of storage backups take, and how data usage is growing exponentially at the moment.

 

I'm looking whether to get tape library or big storage for long-term archives at the moment.

I am not a school. However my tier 1 is:

 

6x Hosts + Netapp SAN (HA pair of filers with 14Tb in aggregates)

 

Mirrored hardware at Secondary DR site (1Gbit fibre link for continuous sync).

 

I also have disk backup and disk to tape for my less important stuff.

Currently 2 HOSTs clustered with SAN, Veeam physical server (local storage) and old HOST/SAN for DR replicas.

 

But certainly looking to increase HOSTs to 3-4 in production, and get a nice fat NAS for long term backups as you said

Currently running the following:

3 x VM Hosts - E5-2620v3 CPUs, 64gb ram (Needs to be 128gb really, so that everything can fit comfortably on 2 hosts for updates and failover purposes, but couldn't afford it this year)

2 x Stacked iSCSI switches (Cisco SG500XG-8F8T)

1 x Nimble SAN - Storing all Data and VMs - CS215 with 10GBe

 

1 x Backup server - running arcserve backup and arcserve UDP

9 Tape LTO5 autoloader

Slower SAN with a bunch of large disks for storing VM backups from Arcserve UDP backups

 

Just need to setup the data for D2D backups to the slow storage and i think I'm well covered. Tapes get swapped weekly and go into a fireproof safe

 

No single point of failure across storage devices or iSCSI network, and insanely quick (thank you nimble!).
