Redirected folders fail after temp network loss and randomly.

Hi,

 

Have folder redirection setup for desktops, documents etc. works really well apart from the occasional time where the redirected folder suddenly stop showing.

 

If I unplug the network cable when a user is logged in then this causes the redirection to break and so far the only solution is a restart. I'm assuming the times when it happens randomly is a temporary network to that one machine.

 

Is there any way to get it to reapply all the folders or to stop this happening without enabling offline files.?

Causes a whole load of issues with different programs.

 

All staff have read abilities of the shared folder and the staff private folder, they then have full control over their own folder.

I am intrigued by this. Offline files should kick in and practically invisibly transition between states as connectivity comes and goes.

 

I don't suppose you have forcibly disabled them?

If you right click the redirected desktop and select Refresh, it should come back.

 

Network drives may/may not display a red cross - either way, it should find the mapped location once it gets an IP again.

Offline files are turned off as i don't want users data on the machines. Some have 50gb in their documents.

 

These should never leave the school and only get unplugged accidentally or if it drops a few packets through the switches.

Found that with the desktop but with folders like documents that doesnt seem to work.

 

Mapped drives seem to be ok.

 

Word moand saying it cant find some template and all sorts.

 

The app data folder isnt redirected.

Well on Win 7 the only 'forcible' way of disabling Offline Files is to disable the Offline Files service using RSAT from a Windows 7 workstation. Microsoft only give you so much control using GPOs.

 

How are you mapping your drives? Scripts or GPP? It shouldn't make any difference, but just curious.

Un-disable offline files. Set them to not automatically cache redirected folders.

 

If you are worried about disk space set a policy to 'format' the CSC each boot.

 

From at least Windows 7 the various levels of the 'file and folders' from the redirector through to the GUI expect the offline files feature to be working for the UX to be as intended.

Also ensure you have KB2775511 and the latest build of shell32.dll

 

The text on hotfix kb articles about only installing if experiencing the exact symptoms is now depreciated. So don't worry about that.

On the networks I support, I disable Offline Files, deploy mapped drives using GPP and I do have KB2775511 installed as part of the base image.

 

Disconnecting/re-connecting over wired or wireless does find/display the contents of the drives once it gets an IP from DHCP Server. No restart or logoff required.

Just tested it out on one machine and everything came back afters i plugged it back in again including documents.

 

Need to do some more testing to work out what machines it does it on.
