I've just had a thought - it may be heresy, but for those of us that are not keen on Linux and would prefer some sort of Windows on the machine, is it possible to install something like Windows Me?

 

I know, I know, we all hate WinMe :) But was thinking it can do most of the things you'd want on a tiddly device like the eeepc, but without the demands of full-blown XP.

 

What do you all reckon?

I can't think of any benefits WinME would give over the pre-installed Linux distro but each Microsoft fanboy to their own ;)

 

Not a Microsoft fanboy at all (actually typing this from Firefox on Mac OS X on a MacBook :p ), just personally find Windows easier to use than Linux. Sorry :)

 

I wouldnt do MediEvil edition, I would do Win 2000 Pro perhaps though

 

Wouldn't 2000 Pro be as heavy (is not heavier) than XP on resources? Agree it would be preferable to Me though!

Eughh OS X :p

 

2000 is lighter on resources than XP, and XP has crappy themes and effects to load, but it has a quicker boot time than 2K.

 

Do you find WinME easier to use than the distro pre-installed on the EeePC as it is, OOTB?

Seeing as my laptop has just gawn and broke (yet another one...I don't know what I do to them!) I'm in the market for a portable device that I can use for doing work on, checking e-mails and configuring switches and routers etc via console and web interface.

 

Another ThinkPad would be lovely but I'm not entirely sure the budget is going to stretch to this at the moment (Student loans, overdraft etc etc.....it's my own fault for choosing uni!) so the EEE has taken my interest somewhat.

 

Where's the best place to get them from, is RM the only place or are there other alternatives for getting a quote?

Misco and PCWB have them listed, also out of stock. They make the same claims about lead times for stock (early Jan).

 

If you wanted to buy over the counter, PC World or Toys R Us might be worth a try.

PC World has got them in stock. Saw one in my local store today and I have to admit that I was pretty impressed by it.

It's a nice bit of kit isn't it?

They have no mechanical hard drive, the 4GB disk is an onboard and non-removable flash disk. There are 3 USB ports for pendrive or USB 2.5"/3.5" external and an SD flash card slot, so space isn't so much of an issue.

Gah bugger. Makes portability a bit...well....lacking if you're going to start carrying around the external USB drives and the associated cables with it too.

 

On the other hand, no mechanical hard drive is quite appealing seeing as i've killed two in laptops in the past year.

Keep all your data on a 4GB SD Card. If someone steals the machine you've still got your data - assuming you removed it from the machine of course :-)

I always carry a 2.5" 100 GB drive in my bag which holds a variety of Open Source and free for personal use software, as well as a whole load of utilities and several Linux iso's which I can burn to disk if needed.

EEEPC couldn't cope with my entire film/music collection !

I'd put that on a server and use the eeepc as a roaming device, everything important is on a 4GB usb flash drive which lives on my keyring ( which also has a bootable trinity rescue disk ;)

 

Probably the EEEPC wouldn't suit a teacher who doesn't know how to make a presentation occupy less than 150MB. but for a usable diagnostic/internet/notebook/geek toy it is perfect.
