cpjitservices Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Hi all, I have a client who has got an issue and I cannot solve the issue, the issue is, when client uses an excel sheet an error pops up saying out of memory, consider using 64 bit version. However, PC has 8 GB Ram and is 64 bit Office 2013. Excel seems to be only using 14% of memory according to task manager. There's no Pattern to the error, seems to be random and on random excel docs. Any Ideas ? Thanks in Advance.
mikkydoos Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Are MS still advising against the use of 64bit Office ?
cpjitservices Posted May 8, 2015 Author Posted May 8, 2015 Tried that, Client had problems with 2007 too.
pcstru Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Does it happen when he launches excel and it opens with a blank workbook? Have you tried clearing (backup and replace with a clean, blank) personal.xls?
cpjitservices Posted May 8, 2015 Author Posted May 8, 2015 No, one spreadsheet links to another and so on, when theres a couple of docs open in excel it gives the error, but not every time.
bossman Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 (edited) @cpjitservices Does your customer have pivot tables in the excel worksheet? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2779852?wa=wsignin1.0 Office 2013 - Word Error (24) - Excel - Not enough memory - Microsoft Community Can your customer open a new excel worksheet and save? When was the worksheet created? Has it been created in a previous version? Try opening the file on another computer with same and different office versions? Just a few things to go at bud P.S. Just found this! https://cpdborg.wordpress.com/2014/01/15/out-of-memory-when-opening-office-2013-files/ Edited May 8, 2015 by bossman 1
cpjitservices Posted May 8, 2015 Author Posted May 8, 2015 (edited) @bossman No don't think they have pivot tables, its a custom made thing where each excel docs links to another etc. Can open exel and save etc like normal. The worksheets where created sometime ago in Office 2007 I believe. It works on another PC, the person who created the document can open it fine. Really strange problem. Cant see it being an OS problem. Edited May 8, 2015 by cpjitservices
mikkydoos Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Try the Office compatibility pack or re-save all the sheets as .xlsx https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=3 Sounds like you might have discrepancies in your office settings. Might be an idea to pick through them comparing them to a working machine. 1
MordyT Posted May 9, 2015 Posted May 9, 2015 I have this issue and want to kill Microsoft. Here is what I have noticed: Many PCs affected. 2013 home and business Once A PC throws that error, any file, even a blank one will throw the error. A reboot fixes it again for a short time I loaded 2010 and this works without the error. Even when 13 throws the error, 2010 still works. A trigger point for us was attach a file to am email from a drive and then open the attachment (before sending). This sets it off. Multiple PCs built off multiple images MS support can't or won't fix it. They did acknowledge it and go WTF? 2010 has its own issues (like can't hit enable editing without closing and reopening sometimes). I hate office (or excel at least)
Arthur Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Microsoft have published a KB article about the insufficient memory error in Office. Click the link to read about the workarounds. Known issues with Office if Desktop or My Documents is redirected « KB2816253 When working with Microsoft Office Documents and the Desktop or the My Documents folder is redirected to a network location, Office applications may exhibit any of the following issues: Crashes Hangs Slow performance when using the Opening, Saving and Inserting Hyperlinks dialogs. In addition, you may receive error messages including: "Word has insufficient memory. Do you want to save Document 1 as Rescued document?" "The file normal.dotm cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents" "Microsoft Excel cannot access the file "". There are several possible reasons: The file name or path does not exist. The file is being used by another program The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook" Initializing Folders Initializing the root folders to display" When Office applications launch, a file system initialization process is performed, and among this process is a check for the Desktop location stored in the registry key at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\Desktop. From this location, Office applications initiate the volume list and get the first fixed volume. Since the desktop location is used as a shortcut, and if the network connection is missing or latent, the Office application is unable to find the location of the desktop and the behaviors described above may occur.
psydii Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Folder redirection has not received sufficient testing by Microsoft since XP. I urge everyone who can, to run windows 10 and the office preview and report vocally any issues you encounter with the following technologies: Roaming Profiles Folder redirection Offline files Group policy We cannot trust the vast majority of those running the previews to appreciate the importance of these technologies. And until we've all gone 1:1 and have multi-gig pipes to skydrive we need them to work perfectly every single time.
