sjpage10 Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Hi, I know this may be unique per school , but does anyone have a 5 year strategic plan I can have a look at thanks ? Stef
beancole Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 wifi thats my only plan but we have no money. But as a standard I would look at your computers, figure out if you need more or if you just want to keep the same amount and estimate when they will be too old to use or beyond repair when they go. same for smart boards etc. (on smart boards look at the new smart TVs - longer lifespan)
psydii Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 (edited) I'm not in a position in which I can really share mine, however one way to start is to go through everything you have and develop a refresh programme for it. Figure below are chosen to be individually plausible in (not given) circumstances. They should not be considered to be anysort of benchmark

2015 2016 2017 2018 2019

Servers/Storage/Backup £60,000 0 0 0 £35,000

Switches / Wifi 0 5,000 5,000 5,000 5,000

Staff Desktops 0 0 50,000 0 0

Student Desktops 15,000 15,000 15,000 15,000 15,000

Printers 2500 0 0 12,000 2000

IWBs / Projectors / Displays 2000 2000 175,000 2000 2000

Software Licences 45,000 45,000 45,000 45,000 45,000

Staff training 20,000 20,000 20,000 20,000 20,000

Equipment Maintenance etc 25,000 20,000 15,000 15,000 15,000

Cabling works/IT Suite moves etc 10,000 5,000 0 0 0

You should have another table for each row which breaks down the item into more detail, again year by year. Now you have a model plan to maintain a steady state. A useful trick now would be to total up the costs over five years and divide them by 5 and then the pupil role. Then compare this figure to your year by year projected spend. This in turn can be compared to the data dashboard published by ofsted, however I have my doubts about the trustworthiness of that data. From here you can then consider what the current problems are and possible methods for solving them. Start by reading the School Improvement plan. Survey the staff, what would their top three / five things be to improve? What would they like it to look like if there was a clean slate/green field? I have more to say, but no time right now... Gibson335 Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 It's good to have a long-term plan, but make sure you have plans B, C, D, etc...to fall back on because in my experience something will come along just about every year to invade those plans.
mrbios Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 I gave up trying to plan in 5 year stints, just do it by 3 years now, things change too much over time to actually have any sort of plan for 5 years from budgets, technology and overall school requirements... and all our contractual agreements are all 3 year contracts anyway. Are you required to have a 5 year plan? If not, i'd chop it down, but i guess that depends on what your SMT wants from you etc. on an individual basis.
psydii Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 You need to show SMT / govornors the true cost of maintaining the current equipment, and present that against expectations/requirements of the teachers. While plans may not survive first contact with reality, in order for the Head to make sound decisions they need to understand the full lifecycle costs, and that more than likely requires a refresh plan stretching to 10+ years. You can have a fairly detailed plan for year 1 and 2, maybe even three... But let things get a bit vaguer over time, and adapt as necessary. By taking a ten year view you are able to enter into a discussion about potentially very different ways of supporting the aims and objectives as layer out by he schools vision statement, current sip and curriculum needs. 1
elsiegee40 Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 With any such planning, it should be remembered that they are only any use as a working document. This means that you amend it going forward to reflect changes. Rolling 3/5 year plan is the way to go, not a one off document that you never look at again
ozydave Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Good god 5 years! I'm lucky if I can get agreement on a month plan. Not joking either
